How do I claim a domain that has just been deleted?

  • Unknown's avatar

For context, I have two wordpress.com free accounts, namely A and B. I created a blog with the domain name I wanted on A long ago and forgot about it. Now recently, I wanted to work on a blog and created a new one on B, everything is set-up and I remember I had claimed this domain on A.

I deleted that site on A, and tried to claim that domain on B. But it shows ‘domain already taken’. Hope this isn’t confusing, what should I do to claim that deleted domain?

  • Hi there,

    What is the domain?

Cancelled domains are not released immediately, and it can take anything from a few days to over a year before a cancelled domain becomes available again, if at all. So there is no way to claim/register a domain that has just been deleted. You should never cancel a domain that you still want to use, as when you cancel a domain, you give up ownership of it, and there’s no guarantee that you’ll be able to use it again, here or somewhere else, in future.

Log in as the account under which you originally bought the domain and comment here to confirm, and we can restore the domain to that account. Once it’s restored, you can then transfer ownership of the domain to this account.

    Hi
The domain I wanted was sandeepenterprise.wordpress.com, it was reserved in another account, I forgot about it. So what I did was, I ‘permanently deleted the site’ from that other account, in order to claim it in MY account, like you do to claim usernames on instagram, twitter etc.
Turns out that doesn’t work as you told.

Is there any way I can re-claim this domain name? It’s actually for a business, if it gets good attention, I was going to go for the e-commerce plan.

  • The only way for an account to use an existing address that has already been claimed by another account, is if the account that owns the address transfers ownership to the account that wants the address.

Free WordPress.com site address cannot be re-used once deleted. We can undelete a deleted site address for 30 days after deletion, but only at the request of the original owner. After 30 days, the deletion is permanent and even the original owner cannot use it again.

sandeepenterprise.wordpress.com was only deleted a few hours ago, but it belonged to a different account than the one you’re using to post here.

Log in as the other account and comment here to confirm, and we can restore the address to that other account. Once restored, you can then transfer ownership of the address to this account.
