How do I close comments on a post?

  • Unknown's avatar

I have had this problem in the past and one of your engineers closed the comments for me on a post. Again, I followed the directions for “Enable and Disable Comments” however the comment box still shows on the post. I want to keep the current comments but close a particular post from further comments. The post I want to close for further comments is: “Shadow People: Who Are They and What Do They Want?”

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hi there,

To disable comments on that particular post, you can start by editing the post in your post editor. On the “Screen Options” tab in your editor, please make sure the box next to “Discussion” is checked. (That makes sure that the Discussion box appears in your editor, so you can change the comment settings there.) You can see what that screen options tab looks like here: Screen Options

Then, look on that page for the Discussion box, and uncheck the box next to “Allow comments.” That will close the comments on the post. Be sure to click the Update button when you’re done.

Please let me know if I can do anything more to help with that. :)

Rachel, can you be more specific? Step by step instructions would help considerably. I am not familiar with your terms, for example “post editor”. Where do I start?

Sure thing! Sorry for not including more detailed instructions earlier. There are a couple ways to get to the post editor I mentioned, so here’s one way I recommend:

You can start by going to the post you want to close the comments on, here:

    http://ghosttalkblog.com/2013/11/21/shadow-people-who-are-they-and-what-do-they-want/

In the dark grey admin bar across the top of that post, look for your blog’s title (on the left, next to the WordPress logo) and hover over it with your mouse. That will bring up a drop-down menu. You can click the “Edit” link in that menu. Here’s what that looks like: https://cloudup.com/c6iiV09RIdz

That will take you to a screen where you can edit your post (the “post editor” I mentioned). On that screen, look for the Screen Options tab in the upper right and click on it. In the menu that drops down, make sure that the box to the left of “Discussion” is checked.

Then, scroll down on the screen until you see the Discussion box. It’ll look like this: http://en.support.files.wordpress.com/2009/12/discussion-metabox.png

Uncheck the box next to “Allow comments.” That will close the post from further comments.

Then, scroll back up the screen until you see the blue “Update” button. Click the “Update” button to save your changes on that post.

Please let me know if you have any questions about that. :)

Rachel, thanks so much for the detailed instructions. I was able to follow through each step and uncheck the allow comments, then update. I can’t tell if it worked for me as I don’t see a message that says “comments closed”. Should I be able to see this?

You’re welcome! The theme you’re using on your blog doesn’t have a “comments closed” message, so you won’t see that on your post. Instead, the comment reply box is just removed so visitors can’t add new replies to the post. I took a look, and I see that comments are closed on that post. It looks like you’re all set there! :)

Okay, that’s great! Thanks again Rachel for your help!
