How do I close my wordpress.com account but retain my wordpress.org account?

At the moment on a google search, the home page comes up as .org but other pages are from the .com site. I presume I need to close the .com account to send traffic to the .org site?

    WP.com: Unknown
    Jetpack: Yes
    Correct account: Yes

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to moderators and staff)

  • To clear up any confusion, WordPress.com and WordPress.org are two different entities: https://wordpress.com/support/com-vs-org/

So, you can safely close your WordPress.com account without affecting WordPress.org.

With that said, I do see you have a site connected to your account by way of the Jetpack plugin, which does require being linked to a WordPress.com account.

Jetpack brings WordPress.com features to your self-hosted WordPress.org site, so much like how a plugin which brought Facebook features to your site would require a Facebook account, Jetpack requires a WordPress.com account.

Almost all of Jetpack’s features make use of heavy processing power (Photon the image CDN, related posts indexing), heavy database usage (stats), or require connections to third-party systems that can be very complicated to setup by yourself (Publicize’s automated sharing to social networks, email subscriptions, etc).

We take care of that all on WordPress.com’s server cluster so your hosting provider doesn’t suspend you for using excessive resources.

I presume I need to close the .com account to send traffic to the .org site?

Would you mind elaborating on this question? I’m not sure what you mean.

Thank you for your reply. I’ve resolved the query you asked for clarification on but from what you have said, is it better to leave the .com account running to utilise Jetpack or close it and Jetpack and just have .org? Whatever is the simplest is the best for me!
    Thank you.

  • That depends if you wish to use Jetpack’s features. My advice would be to leave it, but it’s entirely up to you :)
