There are no trial upgrades, no discounts, no promo codes, no monthly payment plans, no bulk deal upgrades, and no multiple year upgrades. Also note that proforma invoices are not issued and purchase orders are not accepted.
We are billed annually and we must pay for all upgrades in full at the time of purchase after selecting a plan.
Each upgrade bundle applies to a single blog only and is for a single year only when it is due to be renewed. (The only exceptions are one time upgrades for premium themes and guided transfers.)

If you have a site with a custom domain and then upgrade to a plan, you’ll receive an automatic discount for the domain, but you will need to buy the plan using the same username account that already owns the domain.
You can also downgrade to a cheaper plan, but that requires staff assistance. Also note that if you downgrade outside the refund period of a plan, we might not be able to give a refund anymore for the difference in cost, so downgrading is best done when a plan is about to renew.
How domain mapping works
Registering an underlying .wordpress.com URL first is required for domain mapping. That underlying URL does not have to match the domain URL when you are domain mapping. What domain mapping does is providing a seamless redirect to the very same content under the new domain URL when a person clicks the old URL .wordpress.com to the original content. It can take up to 72 hours for domain propagation to take place throughout the internet but it doesn’t usually take that long. https://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/

WordPress.com does not accept domain transfers but mapping an existing domain is possible. http://support.wordpress.com/domain-mapping/map-existing-domain/ The domain or mapping of any existing domain URL is included in the pricing for a personal upgrade, a premium and a business upgrade. The WordPress.COM upgrade for mapping a domain must be renewed annually.

Canceling and refunding purchases

• WordPress.com provides a 30-day refund from date of purchase on all upgrades except Domain Registrations, Domain Renewals, and Guided Transfers.
• The refund period for Domain Registrations and Renewals is 48 hours.

Canceling domains
It is important to know that cancelled domains are not released by the registrar immediately. Also note that here’s no guarantee you’ll be able to use a domain again as it may be sold to someone else. I am considering either 1. to continue hosting a literary magazine on a server at work, or 2. to move everything to WP for hosting.
What level of support does WP offer to facilitate the transfer?
Do I need to spend lots of hours away from my full-time ‘regular’ work, to learn WP?
Does WP offer or suggest folks who have already learned what is needed to migrate a site and update it once a year?
Finally, I understand the WP host-site will accommodate~3Gigs of content. That should be fine for our current content…can we also seamlessly link/access archived content from storage as part of the “current content” experience?
Not trying to sound like a slacker, here…Just trying to juggle my day job with what appears to be X-hours of learning curve.

An existing heavily customized site would be more difficult to migrate, since you’d basically need to add your plugins and theme and configure them, then port the content over using the import/export tool and hope that all of it stays intact. You would need the business plan to support outside themes and plugins.
That said, if it’s not heavily customized, it wouldn’t be as difficult. Also, we manage the installation regularly, not just once per year. Lastly, all of our paid plans have more storage than that: https://wordpress.com/plans
Can you let me know the main goals of this potential migration? Knowing your goal will help us give better advice.

Many thanks, supernovia, for your feedback. Just to eliminate potential misunderstanding, allow me to continue:
1. We are already built on WP themes (some archived issues of ezine are totally custom…built bwp (Before WordPress).
2. By “manage” I mean update our magazine content once-a-year.
3. I understand we need the business plan to obtain unlimited storage.
4. Regarding “storage,” I am still wondering whether we can park appx. 15 years of back issues of the ezine (~10gigs) in storage and access them from the “Archive” link in the “current” blog.The whole concept is, no doubt, one y’all are familiar with:
0. We use a WP-theme website hosted in a private server for contributors to a.) submit content, which is emailed to us, and b.) view the current ezine and archives.
1. Each spring, we update the website with the newest edition and archive the previous edition(s). Some of those archives are parked on WP, and we link to them. (NOTE: I’d like to round up the 2-4? stand-alone editions and store them together so readers don’t google stand-alones and veer away from the main site.)As is, we use WP themes and our own server, which in server years is getting “old.”
We need a more sustainable technical solution…hence the WP business plan…??

You wouldn’t be able to use FTP or add programs outside WordPress, so you would need to convert your BWP stuff and also migrate images to the correct directories, and make sure their paths are updated in your content.
As long as your content is in WordPress you can use the space you want.
