How do I configure Duotone?

  • Unknown's avatar

I am trying to use the Duotone Theme for my blog (website). It insists on putting a big white rectangle containing three search boxes in the middle of my homepage background photo. How do I get rid of it? I want a static homepage. In fact, I want a static website – no posts, no comments. Just photos & text. Thanks

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

The way the theme is designed to appear and to function is stated on the theme description page here > http://theme.wordpress.com/themes/duotone/

No changes you try out aside from those such as Custom Background, Custom Header, etc. which are stated on the theme description pages in the features column (right hand side)
will be visible to visitors unless you purchase an annually renewable custom design upgrade.

    http://en.support.wordpress.com/custom-design/
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/custom-design/editing-css/

You do not need to load the design tools unless you have the Custom Design upgrade. All of these functions can be accessed from your dashboard – without loading the custom design tools – no upgrade required.
    Appearance > Header
    Appearance > Background
Appearance > Theme Options (applicable only to some themes)
Settings > Reading (set a static front page)
Site Title and Tagline > Settings > General

If you are using the preview mode for the Custom Design upgrade some of the settings in that mode will save but they won’t show up on the front end unless you purchase the upgrade.

To go back to the free options, go to Appearance → Themes → Customize → Colors and click the “exit the preview” link in yellow at the top of the panel on the right.

re: front page 404 (page not found) error

That error message can easily be addressed. Publish a post and it will be gone. By default the front page of your blog displays all posts (not pages) in reverse chronological order, with the most recently published post on top. The 404 (page not found) error message on the front page of the blog appeared because the Admin of the blog deleted the placeholder Hello World post. http://en.support.wordpress.com/not-found/

    I want a static homepage.

By default the front page of your blog displays all posts (not pages) in reverse chronological order, with the most recently published post on top. If you do not want all the posts to show on the front page, then you can create a static front page called for example “Welcome” for your site and a “Blog” page for posts.

To do that create two pages > http://en.support.wordpress.com/pages/ After you do that you go to > Settings > Reading and make the designation change and click “save changes”.

In fact, I want a static website – no posts, no comments.

All WordPress blogs by default have comments open on all Pages and Posts as in evidenced own your own blog. You can enable and disable comments on free hosted WordPress.com blogs on this page > Settings > Discussion
Discussion settings is where you set up defaults for comments.
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/settings/discussion-settings/

You can also override the default settings and enable or disable future comments on any individual post or page.
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/enable-disable-comments/

Note: By default, new blogs on WordPress.com will have the Discussion hidden. You can reveal it by clicking on Screen Options http://en.support.wordpress.com/screen-options/ on the top right corner of your Admin page, and checking the box that says Discussion so the module is included. http://en.support.wordpress.com/modules/#list-of-modules

Among the most common misconceptions is that bloggers fail to understand is
    (1) there is only one page we can post to in any blog and
    (2) the static pages http://en.support.wordpress.com/pages/ they create do not automatically update.

Only the dynamic pages like Categories, Tags and Archives created by the software when we publish a post we that we have assigned Categories and Tags too will update automatically update with new posts.

By default the front page of the blog is the post that displays all posts in your blog. Though there is only one dynamic page in a blog for posts (not pages) http://en.support.wordpress.com/post-vs-page/ and we cannot post to more than that one page, we can create the appearance that we have posted to more than one page.

We organize posts by assigning categories to them. You can create a custom menu and add the dynamic categories pages into the custom menu.

Thank you very much! I’ve gotten rid of the posts! But Duotone still insists on plopping another page in the middle of the background photo. Is there any way to configure the Front Page so that it only shows the background photo (and a menu to access the other pages?)

I can probably live with the Front Page superimposed on the background photo. But can I eliminate the “Leave a Reply”, “Recent Comments” and “Archives” on the bottom? Thanks again
