How do I control which projects the Orvis 'Portfolio Page Template' Shows?

I’m using Orvis for my theme, but I can’t figure out how to control what the “portfolio page template” shows. Right now it automatically shows all portfolio projects, which isn’t what I want. I like how the page template looks and want to use it, but it’s only really useful to me if I can control which project-types are being displayed on that page.

You can see the site I’m trying to build here: http://new.michelleprosek.com (it’s a bit messy after the main page as I’ve been experimenting with what I can do with this theme…)
I’m using the static main page, set to ‘portfolio page template’, which is great, but I only want it to be showing specific portfolio items with the project-type “Projects”, not literally everything. So far I’ve ‘hacked’ this by limiting the number of projects shown to 6, and to modifying the creation date of the projects I want visible on the home page so that they are the ‘newest’, but as I add more projects, I’m going to have to keep editing that, which seems a bit ridiculous. There must be a better way?

Any help or suggestions you can give me to get more control over the portfolio page would be great.
(I am aware of the portfolio shortcodes that can be used in Pages, but I don’t like how that looks and would prefer to use the proper portfolio page template – just with a bit more control over what it shows)

One other side issue I’m having with the Portfolio Projects – if I try to add a NextGen gallery to a project, it keeps being shunted into the left-hand column area rather than the main part of the project….is there some way to specify how that gets displayed? I seem to have trouble making even text show up in the main area rather than the left side of the project post. I mostly want to use NextGen because of how the images are displayed – when you click on an image, you just get a nice enlarged pop-up with the details. If I do the built-in ‘create gallery’ option, and then you click on an image, it takes you to a whole new page for that one photo, which is a bit much and I really don’t want that.

Thanks again for any help that can be offered!
    Michelle

Maybe someone else can offer more assistance with this question, as I am not entirely sure the answer to these questions. But I think this might be of some assistance. If you decided to use either Tags or Categories, you could tell it to be at the top level which I believe should make it always appear the way you want it.

In regards to the NextGen issue you are having, I am not familiar with this theme, but I know that most themes are built a certain way. They have limitations on what can be changed. Also, this is another possibility since you are building your site in wordpress.com.

I hope I have helped you some, and hopefully someone more knowledgeable can further assist if needed.

Hi again…I had no trouble installing NextGen, it’s just that the Orvis theme template for a project page seems to divide the page into two colums and forces any text to the left, and images to the right. For the most part that’s sort of okay, but I’m trying to figure out how to get a bit more control over that as if i try to insert a NextGen gallery, it gets squeezed in to the left column, but if I insert a plain image, or do a built-in ‘create gallery’, those get put into the right column. It’s weird, and I can’t seem to change it.

As for the tags, I made sure to update the tags for the Portfolio projects, but again, I can seem to find a way to ensure which projects show up first on my static home page using the Portfolio Page Template…..

There is a section when I go to Customize Theme, called Portfolio (it’s the bottom option under “Static Front Page”), and there is a box for “Portfolio Archive Contents”, but I have no idea what I should be entering there or what that affects, as nothing seems to change no matter what I put there.

I hope that helps to make my issues more clear – really, I just want more control over the Portfolio Page Template and what it’s displaying, even if I have to go and change some code somewhere.

Thanks for the initial help! If anyone is really familiar with Orvis, I’d love to hear more suggestions!

I’m moving this conversation to the Orvis support forum…..now that I’ve found it! Thanks!
