How do I create a custom image header?

Hey everyone! I’m fairly new to WordPress, but am really enjoying it. I’ve started creating a website, but I’m wondering how create a custom image header? (the image that appears at the top). Anyone have any suggestions or know a particularly helpful program to use? (adobe photoshop?).

Photoshop Elements is a fine program, and several hundred dollars less than Photoshop. Much of it is not intuitive, though. There are also photo editors online. It depends on what will go into creating it — merely cropping or resizing to the exact size or something more elaborate.

You will have to pick a theme that allows it. It will likely give you the dimensions, then it won’t need resizing, and I think it is done under design, and the tagline will probably show, if you have one.

You’re right about choosing a theme, morris, but if an image is larger than a theme’s dimensions, the blogger will have to crop it on the fly. It doesn’t get shrunk. Fine sometimes, but not always.

If you’re not already familiar with Photoshop, The GIMP is an extremely powerful alternative. The people who have trouble with it are the ones who are used to the Photoshop interface :-)
The best part? It’s completely free and there are binaries for all the major OS platforms.

I used “Gimp” to make my custom headers and they turned out very nice looking…

So, nobody said exactly HOW to change the header. I assume it’s in a folder in the Theme package, but at WordPress.com, you cannot access FTP. Ideas?

Do you have a blog here at wordpress.com? If so, and your theme allows you to use a custom header, you upload it via your Dashboard>Design>Custom Image Header. Just follow the instructions on that page.

When I go to dashboard/design…I can’t find custom image header? Where is that? Is it only for certain themes? Which ones support the custom image?

Only some themes support it. You can see them if you go to Design and filter the search for “Custom Header”. Then you’ll only see the ones that offer it.

I, personally, use macromedia flash to make logos and headers.

Gimp is a first rate free alternative to photoshop. Inkscape is a good, free alternative to illustrator.
