How do I create a drop down/expand within a post?
-
I’m an author and I like to post excerpts of my books. Problem is they’re very long and take up a lot of space on my home page. Within a post, I want the reader to be able to click on the word Excerpt and have the book excerpt drop down from it/expand from it (not take it to another link or anything like that). How do I do this?

That would involve javascript of some sort and that is forbidden code here on wp.com.
http://en.support.wordpress.com/code/The cursor help tag works here, but for long excerpts it is impractical. Also you cannot add images or shortcode. It’s more for hovering over a word to view a definition.
Would a page jump work? You can jump down then jump back, sort of like a footnote.
http://en.support.wordpress.com/splitting-content/page-jumps/You can combine a page jump with the next page shortcode:

So that way all of your post would be, so to speak one post. It would just have many pages. -
Well, damn :(
I guess I’ll check out your other suggestions, hopefully that’ll work or at least help a little.
Thanks! -
I hope so.
One used to be able to use the gallery function to sort of work-around the issue, using attachment pages (which had their own problems), but that is the trouble with my crazy work-arounds: the gallery function has changed and it no longer works.
I’ve currently have another work-around forcing some of the CSS definitions for menus to work not quite as designed, but each theme is different, and even with my theme, sometimes it’s a bit buggy. I am only playing with a puzzle though, and even with its potential it’s too unreliable for general use. Your blog is much more serious than any of mine to try foolish experiments…
