How do I create a static page in front of a category?

How do I create a static page in front of my Book Review category/archive page, so that I can have the flexibility of changing my header image for that category whenever I want?
With thanks

Hi Patti,
Category/archive pages act like your blog page, in that they aren’t made to include static content. The content will always be changing as you add new posts. There isn’t a way to add a static page or static content to a category/archive page.
However, there may be a way to change the header image for a particular category/archive page using custom CSS (part of your WordPress.com Premium plan). We have tips for getting started with CSS here:
If you’d like CSS help to change your header image, most of our CSS support is done in the CSS Customization forum:
https://en.forums.wordpress.com/forum/css-customization
You can post your questions there, and the expert staff and volunteers in that forum can help you find the CSS you need. Please let me know if you have any questions about that. :)

This is beyond my skill ability, so please tell me another way around it. What if I change my “Writing Portfolio” page to a static page, and rather than have it an add-on, changeable area, I can just replace the content every now and then?

Also, the CSS on my Dashboard only seems to offer control over text changes, not image changes.

Hi Patti,
I see that you went ahead and posted your question in the CSS forum here:
https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/changing-header-image-on-categoryarchive-page
The staff and volunteers in that forum can help you with the CSS code you need. While CSS is all text-based, it can be used to control the images on your blog.
However, if you’d like a way around using CSS, the workaround you described will work. Any regular page that you create can have a featured image that will be used as the header image for that page, so you can do that and just change the content from time to time.

Okay – thanks Rachel,
Should I just copy and paste the content from my Writing Portfolio page onto the new page?

Hi Patti,
You can paste any content you want on that new page into the page editor. If you’d like to copy the content from the posts on your Writing Portfolio page, you can do that. :)
