how do i create a website off of wordpress.com?

  i am new to this site and to blogging sites in general, ive been looking at the tutorials on how everything works but i am still abit confused because i was told by a professor that i could create a website off of this site and all i see are blogs. i am trying to make a website for students to use as a reference and was wondering if someone could tell me where to go to learn how to get started in creating one? thank you
