How do I create space?

Edit your post, select all, select Paragraph from the Format tool (row 2 tool 1), switch the editor to HTML and back to Visual, click Update.
For future posts, make sure the Format tool is set to Paragraph before typing. (Or did you copypaste the content from another source?) -
I typed my post directly on wordpress but I feel like I must be missing something. Under format I see aside, gallery, link, quote, and status, but nothing that says paragraph.

http://en.support.wordpress.com/visual-editor/#row-2You should do as justpi said for older posts:
Edit your post, select all, select Paragraph from the Format tool (row 2 tool 1), switch the editor to HTML and back to Visual, click Update.
In future, remember that hitting “return” (with the “paragraph” format selected) will give you a space between paragraphs.
If you do not want the line-break space, then hold down the “shift” key at the same time as “return.”
