How do I debug the wordpress theme I installed ans activated?

  After I activated a new theme and started to customizing the theme. I received a warning that the theme had not been debugged. I clicked on the highlighted debug in the warning message to debug the theme. That didn’t work. How do I debug the theme?

  I had to change the theme to be able to login to the admin dashboard. I really like that theme and have tried to use it several times but always the warning messages comes up and I cant login to the admin dashboard and I contact support at hostgator and they change the theme and I go back to my old theme. What can I do to fix it?
