How do I decide which url to make primary? I am registering a domain, but don’t want to release my wordpress.com url either.

Found out that if I update the primary url to my new domain, the wordpress url is still reserved, and will redirect.

Exactly. Once you have a custom domain, any traffic to your _____.WordPress.com domain will redirect to your custom domain.
