How do I delete an import attempt and start over?

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi,
I’m trying to import my xanga into my new wordpress. I successfully imported one chunk of xanga posts a few weeks ago, but when I tried to import a second chunk, I never got an email confirmation that the import finished. Weeks later, it still says that it’s in the process of importing, which I can’t imagine is true. How do I delete/cancel that import attempt and try again?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • I have reset your importer, sorry about that!

Please feel free to try again and let us know how it goes.

    Thanks for resetting my importer!

It’s still not working (or at least it’s been processing for 6 hours…which may be normal?)

    Here’s the whole story:

I downloaded the entirety of my xanga archives, which came in a zip file. When I unzipped it, I had 5 .XML files. The first one was the smallest (4 KB), which I’ve successfully imported into wordpress. The remaining 4 .XML files are all much bigger. The second file, which I’ve now tried importing twice is 1.4 MB…Is that too big? It completely didn’t work the first time I tried importing it, and I tried again about 6 hours ago, and it still says processing. Is the file too big, or will it just take a couple of days to import? I have no idea what to expect here.

If it goes 24 hours there is a problem – staff-blorbo or one of the other staff should be able to give you a bit better answer in the morning

  • That shouldn’t be too big, but please let us know if it still hasn’t budged in 24 hours.

Hi again. It’s been 24 hours. It still says processing and I haven’t received an email saying that it’s finished…so that’s the second failed attempt for this specific .xml file (the one that’s 1.4MB). What do I try now?

  • The file you uploaded is technically a WordPress export file, so try the WordPress importer with it this time.

Hey! Bad news. I tried using the WordPress importer this time (rather than the xanga one), and it’s been over 24 hours…still processing. I’m going to go ahead and try a different file.
(I have 5 XML files; I imported file #1 successfully. Since then, all of my failed import attempts have been with file #2, so maybe I’ll temporarily skip #2 and try file #3.)

  • Hm, I don’t see why it’s failing. Would you please try one more time, only this time use a freshly generated Xanga export?

My attempt to import file #3 is still processing from yesterday evening. I’ll go ahead and cancel that one. I just re-downloaded the zip file from xanga.com containing the 5 XML files. I am now attempting to import (from the freshly generated xanga export) file #5…just to mix things up.

Ok, so today I finally got two emails from WordPress within 4 hours of each other saying that my WordPress content import was successful. I was SO excited, but when I clicked on my blog, only the posts from my initial successful import were there. So I’m trying again. I have hope! (In another 24 hours, if no additional xanga archives have successfully imported, is there something drastically different that we can try? Basically, a year’s worth of xanga posts are trapped in XML form, and I’d like to free them.) THANK YOU for your help MacManX!

  • If it fails again, I can have our developers look into what’s failing, but fingers crossed that the fresh export works. Xanga’s export files have always been a bit weird.

Hey! Had to take a bit of a break from these attempt so I didn’t lose my mind! haha
For my last few attempts to import, I actually got emails saying that my imports were successful, but again, when I’d go to my wordpress blog, no new xanga posts were there. I tried it on someone else’s computer, in case there was something wrong with mine…it still didn’t work.
Is there a way for me to send my xanga zip file to someone at wordpress and see if they can figure it out?
    Thanks!!

    Hi there,

I’m sending you an email directly to the address which we have on file. If you could respond and either attach the xml file (or a zip of them) or else upload the files to dropbox and provide a link, I’ll see what I can do!

    Thanks!
