Go to posts > categories in your dashboard and you can edit and delete categories there. The default category you cannot delete, but you can edit it. If you wish to have a different category as your default, you can change that at settings > writing in your dashboard.
The only time you might have problems with editing a category name is if you also have a tag by that same name. In those cases you will have to delete the like tag and then you will be able to edit the category name. Avoid having duplicate categories and tags. The search engines treat them the same, so there is no advantage to having duplicates.

Not a problem If you go to posts > categories and hover over the category name the links for editing or deleting will appear. You can use the “quick edit” link to quickly edit the name, or you can use the full “edit” link and change more things about the category.

Thank you, thank you. I tried and tried to figure it out. I had made a mistake and misspelled Philosophy, I felt like an idiot. I did understand to you spelled it out in your last post. But thank you so much. :)

So sorry, I must be doing something wrong, just cannot manage to edit or delete the category.

If it is the default category, you should be able to edit the name, but you will not be able to delete it until you set a different category as the default category. There has to be at least one category assigned to all posts. That is the way the wordpress software is set up.
What is the name of the category?
Go to settings > writing in your dashboard and see if that category is set as the default.

The name is : Desiderious Erasmus the correct spelling and I spelt it
Desiderious Erismus.I just wanted to change the i to an a.
But unfortunateley by now I am completely confused and as I am 82 you will have to make allowances for my stupidity. -
You aren’t stupid, we just need to figure out what is keeping you from editing the category name and find a place of understanding to meet at.
I’m seeing that you have created tags with the same names as categories. This is not necessary and actually will keep you from editing the name of the category. This is sort of a weakness in the wordpress design that they need to correct at some point.
1. Go to posts > tags and delete the Desiderious Erasmus or Desiderious Erismus tag that is there.
2. Go to posts > categories in your dashboard.
3. Hover over that category name and click the “quick edit” link and edit and save your correction.

If you point your mouse at the name of the tag or category, some text links (reddish color) will appear below the name of the category or tag. In those links will be Edit, Quick Edit, Delete and I think, View. Click on the appropriate link to do what you want to do (edit, delete, etc.).

I’ve deleted the name from categories to make life easier for myself.

hello,
a query about categories, please. i have just changed my main (and only/default) category from ‘@abdelxyz’ to ‘uncategorized’, however, posts from more than three weeks ago retain the old category….can i change this at all?
help!

Setting the Default Category

yes…but the issue remains…the newer posts all have ‘uncategorized’ whilst the older posts retain the ‘@abdelxyz’ category…
