How do I delete the feature space from Twenty Fourteen homepage?

    Hi all,

When I first started working with the Twenty Fourteen theme for http://heathyrjclift.wordpress.com/, I liked the simple black strip at the top with my title and the black left column with the basic widgets. This was all preset by WordPress and super-basic. Then I decided to add a header in the design settings and all heck broke loose. Instead of simply adding a header at the top, it changed all the design elements. With the help of the forums, I have reset almost everything back to the basic look.

However, I cannot seem to completely remove the extra space on the homepage for featured images and posts. I just want a super-basic site. Is there a way to delete this space without digging into code? I realize the featured content space is the main point of Twenty Fourteen, so if anyone has a better theme suggestion (free only) for a thin black header and black left column for widgets, I’m open to that. I’ve looked, but maybe I’ve missed something.

I don’t have WordPress software, I’m just working online. I’ve tried to change themes, then go back to Twenty Fourteen in the hopes that everything would reset. Unfortunately, the theme remembers my previous settings even after switching.

Any help you can give would be greatly appreciated!!

  • Hi there. Posts only display in the featured content area if you assign the featured tag or, if no posts have the featured tag, it will display sticky posts. Your post titled “Welcome” is set to sticky, which is why it displays in the featured area. Unstick the post, and the area will disappear. This will also mean this post will no longer appear at the top of your feed, so you might want to put your welcome message in a page instead with a link in your menu.

    Hi Kokkieh,

Thanks for the response, but I want the entire space where the featured images would go gone and I need to keep the sticky post at the top of the page. When I first set up the site (before I messed with any design settings), this is how it was. My sticky post was at the top of the page, even after adding more posts, and there was no feature space at all (so my sticky post wasn’t stuck there). It was just a thin black stripe with my blog title.

At this point, I just want to go back to the original settings as they were before I added a header at all. It was a very basic default page.

Any idea how I can do that?

  • You’re the second person I’ve come across this week who’ve apparently had Twenty-Fourteen display in a way that, according to the theme’s support doc, shouldn’t be possible. It clearly states that if you don’t have posts with the featured tag it will display sticky posts in the featured content area: https://wordpress.com/themes/twentyfourteen/

It could be that you had experienced a bug with the theme which has since been fixed and disappeared when you changed your settings, so I don’t know if there’s any way to get it back to the way it was without adding CSS to your theme (for which you’ll need an upgrade).

I could be mistaken, so I’ll tag this thread for staff to follow up. Please be patient while waiting for their reply.

    Hello there!

Notice that if you click Appearance → Customize → Featured Content, you’ll see the following note:

“Use a tag to feature your posts. If no posts match the tag, sticky posts will be displayed instead.”

The only way to make the entire Featured area disappear is if there are no stickies or featured posts. The theme is designed to populate that area, the only way to hide it is if there is nothing assigned to fill the space.

This is the way that Twenty-Fourteen will behave, unless (as you mentioned) you have the Custom Design add-on and can adjust the CSS code. I’m happy to help with this, if you choose to go this route.

If you prefer, I can help you choose another theme that gives you the simplicity you desire.

Please let me know how you’d like to proceed, and I can assist! Many thanks.
