How do I detach images from old posts but still retain them for use on pages?
-
When I first published I created a whole bunch of posts (one image on each post). Later, I decided I needed pages and not posts so I could do more with menus etc. Since I was not able to redirect those original posts I took your suggestion and created a message on each post and created a link to direct the viewer to the new corresponding page.
Here is an example: http://missionbibleclass.org/2011/05/01/crossing-the-jordan/
The idea was that those posts would sort of “drop out” of search engines and over time would not get used. I was going to eventually delete them.
Problem: When people search images in search engines the images are still attached to the orginal posts. This means they are directed to the posts and not directly to the new pages where I want them to go. Is there any way to “detach” the image from the posts without having to re-upload them all to the new pages? I have lots of images being used in lots of places and I really don’t want to have to do that.
I know wordpress.org allows redirects but I really like the convenience of wordpress.com
Thanks
Mary

Unfortunately, that won’t help in this case. We have no control over Google’s index. They will eventually remove the image from their results since it is gone, but we have no control over when that will be.

Thanks for the quick response.
What I am saying is that the image is NOT gone. It is on a different page instead of the original post is was and is attached to.
If the image remains attached to the post then I am concerned that the search engine will always “see” the image that way and point to the old post.
That is why I would like to know if there is a way to “detach” an image from it’s original post and yet still keep it.

No, the attachment you’re referring to is only for the usage of gallery and slideshow assembly, and only referenced in the blog’s Dashboard.
There is no way for a search engine to see an attachment unless the image is actually inserted into the post/page.

What if I just go ahead and delete the original post? Will I lose the image that was attached to it?

Thanks for your help.
So, in the media section the image will always say it is attached to a post even when that post has been deleted? And that won’t matter for anything else?
So much for my bright ideas. I still get a lot of views on those old posts and I thought I might have figured out why.
Thanks again.
