How do I disable image links to Flickr?

  • Unknown's avatar

I do not want people to click on an image and be taken off my blog and over to Flickr. This was easy to disable in classic, but I cannot seem to find how to do it in the Block Editor.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi there,

Do you have an example of a Flickr image you embedded previously that does not link? As I recall the original embed method also linked by default.

It may be the case that you will need to download images (from Flickr) to your computer to have an non-linking image on your site, but happy to take a closer look at an older embed and see if there may be a workaround of some kind.

    Thanks for the additional info!

Sure, see this post and posts before that date – https://frommycarolinahome.com/2020/10/28/autumn-jubilee-crafting/
In classic mode, you could click on the photo once it was embedded, then set the link to “none”. I have a screen shot of that, but cannot post a pic.
I don’t have this option in the new block editor. I’ve been disabling the link for quite some time as it keeps my photos off Pinterest as well.

Even if the photo is on the wordpress media, it still clicks to that image url, and away from the blog post. Neither is good.

No link really needs to be the default. Why would I ever want to have someone go to another site or photo URL and away from my blog by clicking on a photo?

Actually, sorry! That link is with WP media.

This one has photos linked from Flickr with the link disabled.

  • Hi there,

You are correct that the Flickr embed block doesn’t give an option to change link to images. We can open an enhancement request over on WordPress.org where the editor is made to ask if such an option can be added, but I can’t make any promises.

I would like to do a bit more testing on this, though. Can you give me a link to one of your images on Flickr itself? From your post I can only get the image file URL, not the image on Flickr itself.

Even if the photo is on the wordpress media, it still clicks to that image url, and away from the blog post. Neither is good.

Do you mean when you add an image via the image block? Those should not be linked automatically. Can you walk me through the exact steps you follow to add an image to a post via the media library?

  • Unknown's avatar

Yes, that should be an enhancement, as it is available on the classic editor.

Link to Flickr photo in that same post – https://www.flickr.com/photos/123822431@N06/50361213782/in/album-72157716041592782/

Adding image to block from Flickr –
    click + to add block
    select ‘image’
    select insert from url
go to flickr, select ‘share’, copy that url (for the same photo the share url is https://flic.kr/p/2jJfoim)
paste that into box on WP, and click the arrow for ‘apply’

Adding an image with WP library
    click + to add block
select ‘image’ as type of block
    click ‘select image’
    click media library
    select the image to embed
click on image, then click ‘select’ in the bottom right.

Also, in this same vein, I used to be able to link a photo to another site, such as the source of the photo used. I can’t seem to do this anymore either.

  • Here’s what I’m observing:

    – If I just paste a flickr url, it embeds the image, with a link that I cannot disable.

    – If I use the image block and choose “from url” it automatically changes to a Flickr embed block, with a link that I can’t disable.

I’m not sure there’s a great way around this right now. It’s possible Flickr wants us to link to their site if we’re using their image bandwidth.

Re: hot-linking images from other sites (displaying the image on your site, from another server) many hosts won’t allow you to do that, so I’d advise against it. Is there a reason you don’t want to put the images on your media library?

If necessary, though, you can accomplish it with some html, if the host allows it.

Nope, I could disable the linking in classic version, so I do not believe that Flickr’s preferences is the reason. Let’s not speculate on that. If it was available before, it should be available in the ‘new improved’ editor. Please submit an upgrade request.

Yes, there are a couple of reasons for not using WP media library
    1. It takes up storage space. I have over 21,000 photos on Flickr now, and would have run out of space in media library some time ago if I hadn’t done it this way.
    2. With Flickr, I can bulk edit multiple photos at once, adding identifiers to make a particular photo easier to find later. So I can upload 50 photos at once, highlight all of them and give them the same name. I’ve often done round up posts with previous projects, and can find them quickly with a search box. With WP, I have to individually name each photo, a big time waster.
    3. Flickr allows me to organize photos in albums, so I can put things together that occur months apart but relate to the same subject. WP doesn’t have this function. So the 20 photos I took of a subject this month, can be organized in an album of the same subject from a year ago.

Re “hot linking” as you called it, you misunderstood, that is not what I want to do. I want my own photos embedded from Flickr to link somewhere else. For example, I often do book reviews, and take my own photos of the books. I upload the photos to Flickr, embed them in the book review post, the link the photo to Amazon so readers can buy the book if they want to.

Wordpress should want people to be able to disable linking, in fact, that should be the default – no link at all, with the ability to add one if wanted. This keeps readers on your page, not taking them off somewhere else. It also makes it impossible for Pinterest to find them, which keeps me in control of what goes up there. At the very least, the link should open in a new tab, not take readers off the page entirely.

  • Hi there,

Nope, I could disable the linking in classic version, so I do not believe that Flickr’s preferences is the reason.

From what I can see Flickr notes (on their support site) that you will need the “direct image URL” to link it to outside sites. They mention this here under the section “Get a direct URL” at the bottom of that page.

For that reason a URL like this will not work, it results in a Flickr Embed which is formatted automatically and links back to Flickr:
    Dâmbovița River

Instead you can use the direct URL as they specify and guide you to find, which in this case is the URL you see below:

You can see that URL ends in “.jpg” which denotes the link is direct to the image itself. In my tests this URL works just fine in in the image block. This is difficult to explain in words, so I recorded a quick video to show you how to find the “direct URL” on Flickr, and apply it to the Image Block on your site.

You can view the at this link: https://d.pr/v/eG4aDT

    Hope this helps!

You are using the direct download menu, while I was using the ‘share’ menus. I’ve used the share ones for almost seven years.

I appreciate the video, as it made it very easy to understand the difference of how you were getting a URL.

I tried your method on my next post, and did a preview. It does seem to be better, but is a lot clunkier to do, requiring more clicks to get the photo link. But better than nothing, thank you for working that out.

I hope WP will add the feature back to give the author the choices on linking, as I still would like some photos to link to outside sources.

  • Unknown's avatar

I think I have figured out the linking, I have to do the photo first, then use the link option and replace the media file link. I’ll see if this works when the post actually publishes on Friday.

    Thanks for the help!!

  • Hi again,

Great, glad you were able to sort that out with the unlinking. About this:

I hope WP will add the feature back to give the author the choices on linking, as I still would like some photos to link to outside sources.

I did a bit of digging here and I see that Flickr’s developer guidelines are pretty clear that to develop an integration with them you must honor their community guidelines, one of which is “link back to Flickr when you post your Flickr content elsewhere”

    You can see here: https://www.flickr.com/services/developer/community/

With this in mind I am guessing the linking behavior was changed (in the new editor) to adhere to their requirements and will likely not be something that we can remove. However, as long as Flickr does not remove the ability to find the direct media URL the workaround I discovered should continue to work without issue.

    Hope this helps!
