How do I download my media back onto my computer?
-
I’ve lost a hard drive and would like access to the photos I have uploaded in my media file. How do I download them? Can I do it all at once? Thanks so much!
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

There is no way to download your Media Library content except by creating an export file of your blog content. The only way to do this would be to export your site content as described here: http://en.support.wordpress.com/export
NOTE: Your Media Library content is an attachment file and when you import that file you are asked if you want to include it or not. -
you need to save the files one by one to your new hard drive
The export file noted above will not help your situation at all – the export file contains the text with links to media, but not the media – so the export file will not put media on your PC unless you have a local host install of the WordPress.ORG software on your PC
Your request is often ask for – but no luck so far getting the staff to make a download feature

Actually, I believe there are plugins that will help you pull out media from a WordPress export.
You’d need to set up a local install of WordPress. Then install the plugin. It would be a bit of a pain, but perhaps worth it. I myself have never done it. Though you might be able to find some advice for it on the WordPress.org forums:

What would the plugin be installed in?
staff-ozmodiar – the download media is a common request. Laptops have been stolen, PC’s have crashes, phones stolen etc. Why not add the download feature, sort of a reverse FTP thing one way down. I would not think it would be very hard for a competent programmer to add this feature.
As more and more people post from phones and other mobile devices this would help manage media. Also as blogs age and people migrated from one PC to another and another it is easy for the original files to get lost over the years.
I would find the feature nice but a bit limited as most of the images I upload are highly compressed to save server space and keep load times quick – so a 75kb picture would be better than nothing – would not match the original 3mb
thanks

PS – a few years back I did a local install – was a bit of a job – but I have seen a few articles recently that imply the local install is easier than it used to be

I’m not against the idea at all and have thought about bringing it up with the dev team in the past. I will try to let this thread remind me to do so.

As a footnote, this was the plugin I was thinking of earlier:

OK – for .ORG – and it is being downloaded even when FTP access can do the same thing – you could maybe license the basic idea or at least there is something that your folks can look at and maybe fine tune for use here – sometimes that hard part is getting that first cut for everyone to take a look at or take shots at (depending on ones point of view)
thanks for bringing this up – we have several people stop by the forum each week looking for this feature
