How do I edit permalink?
-
I like using the the new editor, but I always have to switch back to the classic mode in order to find and edit the permalink. How do I do that in the new editor?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Are you referring to post slugs or page slugs? I’m not clear on if you can do it in the new editor or not as I always use the classic editor, so I tagged this thread for a Staff response. I’m referring to permalinks like this: https://solaze.wordpress.com/2015/03/03/mezzo-soprano-jnai-bridges-to-represent-united-states-as-finalist-in-bbc-cardiff-singer-of-the-world-2015-competition/. It’s found toward the top of the Edit Post page.

We cannot change permalink structure on any WordPress.COM hosted blog but we can change post slugs using the classic editor. Please be patient while waiting for a Staff response re: the new editor.

Hi!
You can change the post slug using the “Slug” field under “Advanced Options” in the new editor as shown here:
For example, say you have a post titled “My-Awesome-Post.” It would have a permalink like this by default:
http://example.com/2015/03/03/my-awesome-post
However, if you put “awesome” under the slug field, it should then have a permalink like this:

I am confused (a common problem!) about this info…Some of my early posts have horribly long permalinks that I thought I was stuck with. Some are among my most popular posts since they are very basic tutorials, so I wince every time I see their urls.
(I guess one of my problems with understanding this thread is that I don’t totally get what a post slug is…) But anyway, IS is actually possible for me to shorten the ridiculously long urls of some my earlier posts???

Yes, but it’s a really, REALLY bad idea.
Nobody but you really cares about the URL length. They just want to read the article.
If you change the URL you are essentially deleting the old post and making a new post with the same content. ALL your incoming links to that post will be broken, and search engines which had been directing people to those links will just stop. They won’t direct people to your new links.
Additionally, the more of these broken links you have, the more severely search engines penalize you. It’s really not worth it.
If you insist, you can just click to Edit the post, and immediately under the title you can Edit the permalink. Then hit Update. Then please do not come back here complaining when Google can’t find your blog anymore and nobody reads those posts.

Ok, raincoaster, you’ve convinced me! I won’t even think about it anymore.
Sorry to drag this out even more, but my second question is whether when I publish a new post, if I can manage to have a longish post title, yet somehow edit the url (the “slug?”) so that it is shorter than the title??? Is that what the above discussion is referring to? (I prefer to use the classic editor, if that has any bearing on it).

@johnbrennanlive
Thanks, I guess I finally get it now! I will definitely do this in with future posts, even if I have to leave the old ones alone. I appreciate all the help! -
@ingridcc – I agree with Raincoaster here. I wouldn’t change old permalinks. The “slug” is the portion of the permalink you can adjust. So, in this example, “my-awesome-post” would be the “slug”:
http://example.com/2015/03/03/my-awesome-post
If you changed the slug portion in the new editor, you could change that to “awesome”:
http://example.com/2015/03/03/awesome
Let me know if you have any additional questions!
