How do I edit posts to be under the correct parent category

  • Unknown's avatar

On my home page some categories display properly under their parent categories and some do not. I have tried editing the categories by adding parents to no avail. This seemed much simpler under the old format. Is there a drag-and-drop method for placing categories under the correct parent ? It makes it so much easier to navigate the Home page

You can edit your Category parents here:

    https://markspitzerdesigns.wordpress.com/wp-admin/edit-tags.php?taxonomy=category

You said that wasn’t working for you though. Can you tell me a specific change you tried to make and what happened instead of what you wanted?

I’ll give your suggestion a try; but here’s an example

If you look on the home page at the ‘table of contents’ on the right, there is a category for ‘Vancouver’ with a number of posts listed under it.

But you can also see the ‘Vancouver Public Library’ NOT under Vancouver.

I have tried to move it there – by using the category and ‘parent’ feature but haven’t been able to.

It’s possible there’s some sort of default that I don’t know about; but I’m lost.

Last year, when I set up my England/Scotland posts, there was still an ‘old format’ available.

I found it easier to get the categories and parents sorted out then.

Appreciate any clarity you can offer

I tried Vancouver Public Library again and got it to work – thanks !

    One more issue

I renamed a post from Columbia River Gorge to Columbia River Gorge Overview

and then set up a parent category called just Columbia River Gorge

I’ve tried a couple of times to set things up to look like this:

    Columbia River Gorge

    · Columbia River Gorge Overview

    · McMenamins Edgefield and the Poor Farm

The renaming process may have screwed something up

I can’t get both of these posts listed under Columbia River Gorge

    Suggestions appreciated

    Columbia River Gorge

    · Columbia River Gorge Overview

    · McMenamins Edgefield and the Poor Farm

I can’t get both of these posts listed under Columbia River Gorge

    1. “Columbia River Gorge Overview” may be a post, but the link to it in the categories widget is not a post. It is a category with the post “McMenamins Edgefield and the Poor Farm.”

    2. In order to display the categories and subcategories as you’ve described above, “McMenamins Edgefield and the Poor Farm” would have to be a category. It can not be a subcategory without being a category. It’s not a category it is a post.

Aha – I think I knew that once
I should be able to fix that
    Thanks

    Correction in my #1 above:

It is a category with the post “McMenamins Edgefield and the Poor Farm.”

    That should have been

It is a category assigned to the post “McMenamins Edgefield and the Poor Farm.”

The category archives page for the category “Columbia River Gorge Overview” contains two posts, both dated 2015/05/12:

    1. Columbia River Gorge Overview

    2. McMenamins Edgefield and the Poor Farm

Links to neither one of these posts appears or can appear in your categories widget, which displays links to categories archives pages, not posts.

I think I sorted it out

    Hi
I think I have a similar problem to Mark.

I used to have a category called ‘culture, philosophy and spirituality’ and I still have that category :-)

But now I also have 3 more… ‘culture’, ‘philosophy’ and ‘spirituality’ :-(

I don’t know how I managed to get them and I don’t want them – but I can’t seem to get rid of them.

i.e. when I go to ‘edit menus’, ‘categories’ I can tick them, but then there’s only an option to ‘add to menu’ – but they are already in the menu! So how can I delete them from the menu? – but without deleting the contents, which need to remain in the ‘culture, philosophy and spirituality’ category.

Strangely, each of these 3 new categories have just 3 posts.
2 of which are the same throughout the 3 categories, just one is different and, on 2 occasions, the different one is at the top, yet in the ‘culture’ category it is in the middle.

Now I might be a novice at wordpress, but there is no way I would have deliberately made this happen, it feels like WordPress conjured up these categories and I would appreciate if you could help me magic them away again.

I think I sorted it out

It’s alright as is, but a bit redundant, as outlined below:

    1. The category page “Columbia River Gorge” (https://markspitzerdesigns.wordpress.com/category/columbia-river-gorge/) contains two posts “Columbia River Gorge Overview,” and “McMenamins Edgefield and the Poor Farm.”

    2. There are two subcategory pages under “Columbia River Gorge”:
    a. Columbia River Gorge Overview
    b. McMenamins Edgefield and the Poor Farm

    3. However, the first subcategory page “Columbia River Gorge Overview” has identical content to the main category page “Columbia River Gorge.” That is, the content of

    https://markspitzerdesigns.wordpress.com/category/columbia-river-gorge/columbia-river-gorge-overview/

    equals the content of

    https://markspitzerdesigns.wordpress.com/category/columbia-river-gorge/.

The categories widget that you’re presently using is not meant to display post titles. The only way you were able to do that is to create a category of the same name as the post title. That’s not an ideal approach. Numerous posts may be assigned to the same category and efficiently displayed in one category archives page. There is no need to create a category to represent each post title.

You could remedy the present redundancy, and include links to all categories, subcategories, and posts in your link hierarchy, by using instead of the categories widget a custom menu. A custom menu is typically displayed in the header navigation bar or a special header menu area, but you can also display it with a custom menu widget.
