how do I export the pictures in my media library?
-
the help page describes a download feature for content and media, but there appears to be no way to actually export the media itself.
Thanks!

There is no download media function, you need to do any download one single file at a time
It is an often requested feature, but sadly one that has not been added yet – won’t do you any good but I have flagged this for the staff so they know yet another person needs to download their media library – maybe they will submit it to their ideas folks

Hey there,
Thanks for the tag, captnmike.
Cheryl, this is true, images must be downloaded one at a time.
If this is important to you, please add it to our Ideas page, and I’ll also make mention of it to our developers, internally.
Out of curiosity, did you just want those images/videos/etc as independent files? Or were you hoping to have them to upload to another site? If it’s the latter, there is a possibility that will make the process quicker. Let me know!
Looking forward to hearing from you. Thanks very much.

I need to move photographer’s blog into a more modern looking template. She is a very active blogger so there is a lot of material and she doesn’t want it to look trashed during the transition. We will only be able to peck away at it so it will not be quick.
It looks like my only option would be to change all her posts to draft mode to make them invisible. Or is there a better way? -
I need to move photographer’s blog into a more modern looking template.
If you are changing themes the pictures and posts stay where they are – the look does change –
If you are moving to another address the content can be exported from one site and imported into another site
I just looked at your site and it is pretty empty
If you are working on a WordPress.ORG install, you probably have some other options, but you are in the wrong forum if the blog is a .ORG install and should be asking for help at https://wordpress.org/support/

It’s not my site that is to be changed, it’s a photographer’s site and she is on wordpress.com. Her blog has hundreds of photos and unfortunately early on she didn’t upload them individually but rather collaged them into long scrolls. This is why I’d be afraid to just activate a new template that is viewable to the public.

Set up a new test blog – set it to Private to keep search engines out
Dashboard >> Settings >> Reading >> Visible to only those I chose
Export from current blog – import into test blog – then change themes and test away
