How do I figure out what is slowing my site down?

Hello, I am concerned that my website may take too long to load on various pages and that it will decrease my traffic and engagement. I have tried a few different “free” site performance testers but the results are inconsistent and I have to buy an upgrade for the problem to be fixed. Is there a way I can troubleshoot the site and different pages to see what it’s hanging up on? I am fairly new to building a site so I may need some help with a couple of the steps if there is a solution (I’m sure there is).

So far I have gone through my themes and removed any inactive ones, where there was only one, gone through my media library with a couple of plug-ins, and removed old plug-ins. I’m still learning about the various plug-ins and wonder if I have any conflicting ones that may be contributing to the problem. Thank you!

  • Hey there @nikipt77, your site isn’t hosted here with us, but I’ll try to point you in the right direction! I’d recommend the test at webpagetest.org, since it offers specific tips that can help.

If you’ve had complaints about slowness, DNS speed could be an issue, and it looks like you could simplify your theme and plugin lineup if you want to further increase speed. You might try deactivating fancy-looking script-heavy features like the post carousel, since the posts are displayed below that anyway. And remember that anything loading from third-party sites (like share counts) can slow things down a little, and that can add up.

You’d also be welcome to host here if you’d like. Our DNS is known for speed, and newer themes can be very fast depending on how complex you make your layout. If you’re interested, I’d recommend importing your content with this method (vs importing everything; it’s a cleaner start), picking a newer theme, and then using the Personal or Premium Plan to connect it all. Let us know how we can help! Here’s the difference between our services and the free WordPress software:

And if you’d like more help with running your own DIY WordPress installation, you’ll want to use the forums over at WordPress.org. Cheers!

Thank you so much! I honestly couldn’t figure out if it was a wordpress.org or a wordpress.com website because it shows both in different parts of the dashboard and site plus I have two dashboards for some reason. Is that normal?

@supernovia my site is hosted through Bluehost, does that make things operate differently?

Yes. As @supernovia explained, your site is using the WordPress.org software, so you can seek further help in these forums: https://wordpress.org/support/forums/
