How do I fix formatting errors when I copy/paste from Word?

WordPress always doublespaces my single-spaced post. When I do a Copy using the Word 2007 app, and Paste in my browser, the rest of my formatting usually comes over properly, but double-spaced. Lately WordPress seems to append a prefix of format notations at the start of the post even in the regular text view. Today, the post was triple spaced with lines breaking after the first word of a title even though there was no paragraph change and I could not simply delete spaces. It also changed words and half lines to bold which I could not remove.

When I do a CTRL/C CTRL/V from my document that usually works better, but colour formats and some of the bolding never come over. And still double spaced.

Since my weekly post is a newsletter about events and contests and submission calls, it is a very long one, not conducive to doing line by line edits.
I cannot anywhere find either a line-spacing function or a font size function on WordPress.com either, so anything I can’t solve by a delete or a BOLD/unbold I am stuck with. Looks like a cut-up exercise. I’ve done my best to fix it up, but I could not simply re-post because I had added several pix and did not want to have to do those over as well.
Took me over an hour and a half to do what normally takes about 20 minutes.

Microsoft Word is a word processing program that’s not compliant with web standards. The result of copy and pasting from Microsoft Word into the Tiny MCE editor in WordPress blogs can be unexpected, and contain a lot of formatting code that’s not compliant unless you know how to use the built-in features in the Visual editor for using Word cleanly. http://en.support.wordpress.com/visual-editor/#pasting-text

Note you need to click the kitchen sink icon #15 at the end of Row 1 to have Row 2 appear. http://en.support.wordpress.com/visual-editor/#row-1

Go here and enable this > Settings > Writing
    Formatting
_ WordPress should correct invalidly nested XHTML automatically
    “save changes”

I recommend using Windows Live Writer for posting to your blog > http://en.support.wordpress.com/xml-rpc/windows-live-writer/

WordPress always doublespaces my single-spaced post. …

Blog editors and word processors are not the same and do not work the same way. The web standard is one blank line only, so you cannot add more blank lines by pressing return repeatedly like you would do with a typewriter or in a word processing application. If you want to learn how to format and space your posts and pages see:
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/writing-and-formatting-poetry/

If you are working in the Visual editor, to get single spacing between paragraphs hold the SHIFT key down and simultaneously click ENTER at the end of the paragraph.

If you are working in the HTML (Text) editor, a single click of ENTER will give you a single-spaced line, and two clicks of ENTER will result in double spaced lines. http://onecoolsitebloggingtips.com/2011/09/13/wordpress-formatting-and-spacing/

P.S. When you create a new post, always make sure the Format tool is set to Paragraph before you start typing. It’s in the Visual editor Row 2 first position “style”. See the illustration here http://en.support.wordpress.com/visual-editor/#row-2 If you forget to do that then edit the post, highlight all in the Visual editor, select Paragraph from the Format tool, switch editor to Text then switch back to Visual and click Update.

Thanks. I will set up the default fix for sure! The problem with using a different app for the post is that I also send it out by email, so it has to be in something the readers are comfortable with and have access to.

I am not trying to add spaces, but remove them. That is why I use the delete key not the return key. I think there may also be a problem because I create the docs in Word 97-2003, not 2007.

I will check out the format tool for paragraph, as I don’t recall ever seeing it. Unfortunately there is so much formatting that it is almost impossible to decipher in the HTML editor.

But I will definitely check it out too.

    Thanks. Carol

the answer is was tempted to post above was ditch WORD and use Windows Live Writer instead, or create your posts in the WordPress editor.

Looks like I had already selected for WordPress to auto correct the XHTML. I found the kitchen sink! I will take a little time and go through these steps. I will take a look at Live Writer too. Thanks again!
