    Please start by reading these:

The most effective way of promoting a blog within the WordPress.COM community is to seek out other blogs in the same niche as our own blog and post meaningful comments to posts in them. You will find lots of threads in the forum searchbox filled with advice on a subject and you will find I have posted into many of them because it’s a subject I blog about.

Social networking tremendously expands the audience you can connect with. At the end of the day, if you do not use social media and social networks to promote your blog posts and blog, then you will find building a growing readership is more difficult as the audience you reach will be limited.

one way is to make sure that your post has plenty of relevant tags – and then you can use the tags to find another blog that is in your field – and as timeth says, make yourself known by making good comments – as time goes by you might suggest to another blog that they link you and you link them –

If you have a facebook page use it to promote your blog, everytime you update the blog update the fb page – and keep adding friends

Attach a link to your blog to your email messages – then email all your contacts telling them of your blog

it’s all marketing – and can be rewarding.

Keep your own blog stats, run your own graphs, do growth calculations (I was an accountant once, sorry)

    good luck

I do not wish to offend only to inform.

    You have said:

Ummm … plenty is not good advice. More tags is not better and can even result in being perceived by search engines to be spamdexing. When that’s the perception the posts will not be indexed and will not appear in SERPs (search engine page results).

There are also ramfication for over use of tags here at wordpress.com. See here to understand what I mean. If one over does tagging their posts will not display on the WordPress.com global tag pages http://en.support.wordpress.com/global-tags/#missing-posts

As I have stated in my post I linked to above the best advice is to use as few relevant categories/ tags as possible. I never exceed a total of 10 categories and tags on any post I publish and all my posts do appear in the WordPress.com global tag pages.

Thanks timethief, when I was starting out I had no idea that more is less when adding categories and tags to blogs, and that it was actually hurting my progress.

Less than 10, and probably less than 5, otherwise just write another post for that site.

It’s interesting that those who do spamdex would be utterly peeved of if they went to a library and research and reference librarian sent them to 80 places in the book shelves to locate the material they are looking for.

Library books do not have have zillions of categories and tags. They have the least number of relevant categories tags that accurately describe the content of the book in question. Well, that common sense rule of thumb apllies to blog posts as well as to books.
