How do I get followers to follow .com site instead of unused .wordpress site?

  I purchased domain name http://www.bethduffus.com and have set up my blog on that site. When I follow other WordPress users via the Reader, however, and they follow me back, they end up following the original bethduffus.wordpress.com site. I am not using that site for a blog. How can I switch them over to the active site? Advice appreciated. Beth

  Hi Beth!

  I believe there’s some confusion between your WordPress.com site and your domain. Your domain bethduffus.com is mapped to your WordPress.com site bethduffusdotcom.wordpress.com. You can think of those two as one in the same. When someone follows your site bethduffus.com, they’re following bethduffusdotcom.wordpress.com and vice versa. They’re actually the same entity. The .wordpress.com version is only visible to you as an admin when making updates to the blog.

  Your other site, bethduffus.wordpress.com, is unrelated to the bethduffus.com site. It’s an entirely different site. If someone were to follow that site (bethduffus.wordpress.com), they would not receive your blog updates to bethduffus.com. Does that make sense?

  You can see followers for bethduffus.wordpress.com here:

  I can combine the two into one follower list on bethduffus.com if you would like. Would that work?

  Totally get that bethduffus.com and bethduffusdotcom.wordpress.com are the same thing. That’s all fine.

  It is the separateness of the above combo-site from bethduffus.wordpress.com that is the problem. When I’m browsing on Reader, I assume I have my ‘bethduffus.wordpress.com’ hat on. So if I follow a blog from there, and the blogger wants to follow me back, they will automatically follow that site. Except I’m not using it. My blog is on bethduffus.com.

  If you are able to combine the lists so that those who ‘follow back’ automatically follow bethduffus.com I would be delighted.

  Thanks for clarifying Beth! You’ll want to update the web address and primary blog fields here:

  https://wordpress.com/me/account

  That way, when followers click on your username, they’ll be brought to the appropriate blog, not bethduffus.wordpress.com. Can you give that a try?
