How do i get my alt text in gallery ids
-
So if im inserting my images in any other way than single images eg a gallery, all i get in the code is gallery ids and no alt text.
Would say google still be seeing the alt text of my images even if the code only shows the gallery id code and no alt text?
If not than is there an easy fix?

Hi Tia,
There are two ways you can do this:
After uploading the images to your gallery, click the pencil icon in the gallery block toolbar. That should open the media library with all the images in the current gallery already selected.
Click Edit at the top, and you’ll be able to cycle through all the images in the gallery, adding alt text, descriptions, and captions as needed.
Alternatively you can also go to the media library at My Site ->Site ->Media after uploading your images, and edit the images to add the alt text from there directly.

Thanks for the reply. When i click the pencil theres no option to add alt text.
I always add my images to the media library and edit the alt through there. Then ill start a page or post and add in the images as thumbnail grid. All thats there is the gallery ids in the code.
Still stuck on this

It happens on my other sites aswell.
Any page that ive inserted images as a thumbnail gallery. Pages with images inserted as individual images are fine. -
Another thing. How do i keep using the classic editor. I dont like the new block editor that is set as default as of today.

Heres a page that just has gallery ids and no alt text

Hm, I see the alt text in the images there, but maybe I’m misunderstanding.

And, if you really want to use something like the classic editor, we recommend sticking with the classic block: https://wordpress.com/support/wordpress-editor/blocks/classic-block/
For more details, please see https://wordpress.com/blog/2020/08/13/the-classic-editing-experience-is-moving-not-leaving/
We do recommend the new editor though, and we have some extensive documentation available at https://wordpress.com/support/wordpress-editor/

I see.
Are you viewing page source in a browser because im reading in the html screen in wp.
Could that be the issue? That wp is only showing gallery id code but in a browser it displays the alt code? My laptop broke so im using my phone. -
Yes, the alt tags and other goodies are outputted on the front automatically based on what you’ve saved in the media library, you won’t see them in the editor. :)

I have other questions relating to menus.
How can i change a pages name in the menu?
If i have a long page name in the menu and it looks cluttery. Is there a way to shorten the hyper text of a page and have it reflect on every page the menu is on? -
Im not enjoying the new edditor. If i go into html to put a h2 between the image gallery and a ul it tells me a block has encounted an error etc.
How do i insert a block between two blocks without it causing problems? I was between the two blocks code so it shouldnt do that. -
On another one of my blogs im using the classic block i believe. Theres no option for editing the html.

If you create a custom menu for your site, you can edit the labels that appear for pages in the menu to be different from the actual page titles. You do this in the Customizer:

How do i insert a block between two blocks without it causing problems? I was between the two blocks code so it shouldnt do that.If you hover your mouse in the space between two blocks, you should see the + button to add a new block between them.
Alternatively you can just add the new block at the bottom, and then use the up/down arrows in the block toolbar to move it to where you want it in the post.
On another one of my blogs im using the classic block i believe. Theres no option for editing the html.
With any block, click inside the block, and click the … icon in the block toolbar. There you’ll see an option to edit the block as HTML. You can also click the three dots top-right in the editor itself and select the HTML option there to view the HTML version of the entire post, rather than just a specific block.
However, I don’t recommend you edit blocks that way – specific blocks only accept specific HTML, and adding unsupported HTML to a block will break the block. If you want to write content in HTML, it’s better to use the Custom HTML block for that.
Turns out i have to view the page in desktop mode on my phone to get to html editor
You should be able to reach the HTML editor on the mobile view of the site same as on desktop. But see my comment above about editing HTML directly in the block editor.
