How do I get my blog back?

  • Unknown's avatar

I had a long-standing blog on WordPress that has disappeared in the last few months – I don’t visit it all that often. I’ve used my email address and every password that I can recall ever using, and it appears this whole thing has just disappeared. There’s a fair amount of material here that hasn’t been copied anywhere else, and I need it. Please help me recover it. In case you need my email address (which you likely already have), it’s ‘(email visible only to moderators and staff)’. Please get back to me ASAP. Thank you. – Doug Norman

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

What is the URL of the blog you’re talking about?

  • Unknown's avatar

Not sure I can say. All I know is this: I had a WordPress blog site where I was putting stray thoughts, and there were maybe 40-50 entries. At some point, I tried putting a fake name on the account, so the fake name would show to the world if I ever decided to make any of the entries public. That was 2-4 months ago. Today, I tried to go back to the site, but there are no entries – although it does use my ‘fake’ name. I wonder if I somehow accidentally deleted everything prior to my changing my ‘screen name’, or hid it somewhere I can’t get access to it. Does this make sense? Is there any hope of recovering my old entries?

You say you tried to go back to the site, but you aren’t sure you can say which site? Then I’m afraid I have reached the limit of my ability to help you.

No – you asked for the url – and the url of the place I can’t get to. I’m not sure what you are trying to get to here. When I use my email address and the password I remember (just to be clear, then: knowledge of a ‘url’ is not necessary to gain access to my site – or, for that matter, any WordPress site), I get a site – it’s just one that has none of my previous entries.

I had a long-standing blog on WordPress that has disappeared in the last few months […] it appears this whole thing has just disappeared.

What site / URL is all of this referring to? What is the URL of the “long-standing blog”?

Now I’m totally confused – three people have now asked me, ‘What is the url?” I guess I just don’t understand what “url” means. I thought it was a website address, like ‘www.bugsbunny.com’. But the meaning here seems to be, what is the hosting domain – like, ‘WordPress.com’ or something. If true, this brings its own confusions – I thought this was all about WordPress.com. And actually, when I first put the question out there, I thought I was going to get a WordPress techie person in response – this seems to be a users group. I apologize for all my misundertandings – I guess I’m just not versed enough to even get myself understood . . . .

Yes, it is. If you’re trying to log into it and looking at it, the URL is in the browser bar. What is it?

Even staff can’t help you log into the blog if you don’t tell them what blog it is.

OK – interesting development. Today, when I get on the WordPress homepage, I’ve been faced with a presentation dominated by a Window calling itself, ‘My Blog’, and it’s described as “Here’s an overview of your blog.” Next to this blurb are what appear to be 2 choices: one entitled with my ID, and the other one entitled, “Create A New Blog”.

Part of the first choice is a link called “1 Page”. Today I’ve been clicking on that, and getting a page I don’t recognize – but the URL for which is “http://dougnorman.wordpress.com/wp-admin/edit.php?post_type=page”. This is what I don’t recognize.

However, I’ve just tried clicking on the ID, and it is also a link – and it takes me to “http://dougnorman.wordpress.com/” – and this is my page with all my entries.

So, thanks all for the help – although I don’t understand the whys or wherefores of any of this.

For the record, I do understand what a ‘url’ is – but it is really pretty silly to ask someone for the url if they can’t get to it because they don’t know it – isn’t it?

  • Unknown's avatar

http://dougnorman.wordpress.com/ is the URL of the blog you’re talking about or not? It doesn’t have any entries at all, it’s an empty site.

  • Unknown's avatar

No, it’s not empty. It’s all private.

  • Unknown's avatar

The blog visibility at http://dougnorman.wordpress.com/ is set to public. To change it to private see here > Settings > Reading
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/settings/privacy-settings/

The 404 (page) not found error on the front page will be gone as soon as you publish a post, not a page.

NOTE: In the case of any blog being fress hosted byt WordPress.com you can visit https://en.wordpress.com/wp-login.php?action=lostpassword
and if required click the “Need More Help” link to complete the form for account recovery.

edit: ” fress hosted byt ” was meant to be “free hosted by” :(

Not sure what you mean when you say the ‘blog visibility . . . is set to public.’ The ‘visibility’ is set on every, individual, post. I’ve set every, individual post to ‘private’, and no one else should be able to see them. Are you saying that you can see the content of my posts? If so, please advise immediately! Thank you.

  • Unknown's avatar

…she’s saying that you can make the entire blog private with one command, instead of doing it by post.

I flagged this for staff to sort out because I don’t think we’re really getting anywhere. They can see all the blogs registered to your account, they can detect your usernames if you give them your email addresses, and this won’t take long for them to sort.

I have a similar situation – not as complex – where do I ask my question? I’ve never used forum before.
Is it ok for me to post here ?
    thank you
