How do I get my blog hosted?
-
I’ve recently started a blog on wordpress, having previously had one (for 15 months) on blogspot which was deleted by a hacker. I believe I need to get my blog hosted to ensure this doesn’t happen again. Can you tell me how I go about doing this? Thanks.

“Get your blog hosted” doesn’t really mean anything. If it’s a blog that is online, someone somewhere is hosting it.
It sounds like someone told you that you had to pay for hosting to prevent being hacked. This isn’t true. The majority of blogs that get hacked are on paid hosting, I would venture to guess.
http://eatingcoventgarden.wordpress.com/ is hosted by WordPress.com, which is free but which is also pretty hack-proof because of the code restrictions. You can’t use javascript exploits on blogs where javascript is stripped out automatically, for instance.
To prevent your blog from being hacked, make sure:
1) you have a really strong password on your EMAIL account. Lots of hackers just hack the email, then click the “forgot password” button on the blog and get a new one emailed.
2) have a really strong password on the blog which is NOT the same as one you use anywhere else.
3) don’t let anyone else be admin of the blog.

Thank you very much for your advice. You are right, I was told that if I didn’t pay for hosting it would happen again. I will set up stronger passwords. Thanks again

That advice was wrong. I’m a reporter who specializes in hacking, Wikileaks, and Anonymous, and I do know what I’m talking about. As long as your passwords are good and you don’t trust the wrong person with Admin control of your blog, you should be very safe here.
Also, I suggest not enabling Post by Email/Text.

Thanks. I think my passwords were strong before and I am the only person who has Admin control, so it is baffling why/how it happened. I have changed my email password now. Is it a good idea to change them fairly regularly?
Is there anything else you recommend I do or don’t do? -
Blogspot is WAY more hackable than WordPress.com.
Yes, it’s a very good idea to change them frequently, but more important is making them strong. Ten or fifteen characters, some numbers, some *#&(# symbols, some letters, no real words. And DEFINITELY no names of anything from Lord of the Rings; apparently they’re very very common for passwords.

Wish I’d known how hackable blogspot was…anyway, at least now I’m on wordpress. Thanks for your advice on passwords, I will bear all that in mind. Who’d have thought Lord of the Rings was that popular for passwords! Thank you.
