How do I get my contributor an account on wordpress without creating a blog?

I am trying to invite someone as a contributor to my blog but when prompted to create a wordpress account name they are asked to provide a blog site and when they put in the blog it says it already exists, which it does but I need them to contribute to it. How do I fix this?

Your contributor can use this link to signup for just a username.

Once that’s done you can invite him/her to be a contributor to your blog under invite users.
