Hi there,
WordPress.com can’t control search engine results, but we do notify search engines whenever you update your blog. Please note that it can take a number of weeks for search engines to update when you change your blog’s address or domain. For more information about WordPress.com and Search Engines, please see this page: Search Engines
You can also try using webmaster tools to try to speed up this process: Webmaster Tools

Thank you for the helpful information. Before I got your post I found a page with info on verifying my address with Google and soon after I did it it showed up in searches! By yesterday, 2 days after the ad came out and 9 days after I purchased it I was able to access the website both from the URL and Google searches. I’m very happy that I didn’t have to wait 4-6 weeks.
FYI. If the information about having a waiting period before people could access the new address was evident when requesting and purchasing a domain, I missed it. I am a novice at this. One week after I got the new domain it appeared in an a newspaper ad as a source of further info on my topic. I started to worry when I was not able to access it online and after learning of the waiting period.
Can you point to where this information is given when procuring a domain? Thank you.
Word Press is a wonderful resource and I am very happy with the results. I look forward to learning about and experimenting more with it in the future.

To clarify, that waiting time only applies to search engine results, because WordPress.com can’t control how your site appears in those results. Visitors can still access your website at the custom domain even before it appears in search engines results. By typing the custom domain directly in their web browser’s address bar, they can go straight to your website. (For example, anyone who read about your website in the newspaper ad would be able to put the address in their browser and access it without any problems.) I hope that helps explain how this works! :)
