how do I get my posts in grid-form in my category menu's?
-
The menu’s I have on my blog are the categories of my posts, they work perfectly fine like the way I want to. However when you click on a menu, for example ‘Travel’, the full posts are being shown and I want them to be in grid formation, so you only see the featured image and the title (clickable), like the way it is on my home page. How do I do that?
In short:
I use the revelar theme, with a grid on the homepage and I want the menu’s the look the same way.I hope this made sense.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi,
Category pages are dynamic pages created automatically when you add categories to the site. Regardless of the theme used, you won’t be able to change the way posts are displayed on category pages.
-
In other words, we don’t have different template options on category pages as we do, with some themes, on static pages.
-
That is true about the category pages. However, one might be able to create a “page” for a category and use a variation of the display post shortcode for a specific category and might be able to also have it display a thumbnail image. I haven’t tried to figure out the exact shortcode but this page should give us the tools to try it.
-
I was close to shortcoding the content, but the layout eludes me.
For content I was working on some variation of this:
[display-posts category="Beauty" posts_per_page="-1" image_size="thumbnail" wrapper="div"]
But the grid layout would require some CSS….

houstonweaver,
Nice work. I had known about using display posts shortcode with a category argument and thumbnails, but didn’t consider it an option in this case, as there are no arguments provided in the support page which might result in a grid layout. Good luck regarding CSS. You might wish to submit a new topic to the CSS Customization forum

houston,
but [I] didn’t consider it an option in this case
That’s not really accurate. I was aware of that option, and decided not to mention it. But it’s a valid option, and a very useful one. Thanks for pointing it out.

Thank you for your reactions! I use the free version so unfortunately I can’t change/customize the css.

I tried to change it in the WP admin -> settings -> reading and then I ticked ‘summary’ in ‘for each article in a feed show: (full text or summary), but it still shows the full text. Or maybe that has nothing to do with the way it will be shown in the categories.
-
it’s okay if my posts don’t appear in grid-form, as long as the posts don’t appear in full length in my categories. Just a list of the posts with the title and the featured image and maybe a summary or an excerpt is fine too.

I’m surprised by this result. It is my understanding that this setting should result in the display of excerpts or summaries of posts on your category pages, and on other archives pages. However, that may not be true for all themes. Some themes may include code which overridesthe setting.
I’ll tag the topic for staff attention. Please wait for staff to respond.

This could be accomplished with customized display posts shortcode. Something like this, for example:
[display-posts category="food" include_excerpt="true" image_size="thumbnail" posts_per_page="-1" include_date="true" order="ASC" orderby="title" wrapper="div"] -

I haven’t had a chance to look further into this yet. Did you try including the excerpt in your display posts shortcode?
Can you try pasting this just on a test page and save the draft and preview it just to see how far we have gotten so far – if we have gotten anywhere at all…
[display-posts category="Beauty" posts_per_page="-1" include_excerpt="true" image_size="thumbnail" wrapper="div"]
You might have to have specifically written an excerpt for this option to work.
Or maybe wait for the experts….

Doc
Sorry I was editing mine at the same time … And hadn’t refreshed the page …
I think we both really like this topic!

Thanks again for all your replies!
Where do I neet to put the shortcodes? In the HTML tab when I edit/create a post? Or do they go somewhere else? (I don’t know much about HTML and CSS)
-
I tried some different things and it’s getting better! I tried it with the travel menu, to see what would happen. I changed the menu into a page instead of a category and then added this shortcode on the page under the HTML tab:
[display-posts category="travel" include_excerpt="true" image_size="thumbnail" posts_per_page="10" include_date="true" order="ASC" orderby="date" wrapper="div"]The posts are now ordered by date, with the oldest post at the top, do you know how can get the newest at the top? I think I need to change ASC in the shortcode to something else.
ps I hope my english is allright since it’s not my first language
