How do I get my posts to display in alphabetic or numeric (ascending) order?

  • Unknown's avatar

I would like to display my posts in the order 0, 1, 2, 3, etc. But instead the page displays posts 3, 2, 1, 0 and there doesn’t seem to be any easy or intuitive way of changing this.

I have been searching diligently and all that I see recommend are plugins. But allowing this sorting preference is such a basic, essential feature.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

See the Show Your Posts in Chronological Order support page. Following the instructions therein allows you to reverse the default order, which is reverse chronological order.

If you don’t want to do chronological or reverse chronological order, there is also the option to create a book like structure which, looking at your blog, may do what you want it to: https://en.support.wordpress.com/write-a-book/

If you stick with either chronological or reverse chronological order and publish posts out of order you can always edit the publish date-time stamp for specific posts.

    Hope this helps.

Achieving alphabetic order on a standard posts page is more complicated. Unless you publish your posts in reverse alphabetic order you’ll have to adjust publish dates to create an alphabetic reordering of posts. Using shortcode as described below is far easier.

Both alphabetic and numeric ordering can be done more simply by using a static page with customized shortcode to display your posts. Insert within the pagedisplay posts shortcode with the appropriate arguments appended.
    Display post shortcodes with arguments:
    Ascending order — [display-posts order="ASC"]
    Alphabetical order — [display-posts orderby="title"].

See the thing is, I have a static page that has a link leading to a separate blog (the 1st book) that uses the Cubic theme.

I like the cubic theme (because I do art & photography as well as writing and this gives me a venue to apply all 3 of those) and all I want to do is control how my cubic theme displays the posts. (I’d like it in ascending numeric form – based on the title since i number them 0-11. Or ascending chronological format based on WHEN i posted them if I can’t get numeric).

The options I have read involve making a separate page and they might work but they also require eliminating the cubic theme.

The thing is that I both want the cubic theme AND to have them ordered numerically or chronologically.

    Is this possible?

If it is not possible, is it possible to make a custom page that includes the code for the cubic theme and the code for ascending-order posts?

If none of this is possible, the only other thing that might make sense (in order to keep the cubic theme) is to sticky a post at the beginning that tells people about the inflexible format :/

Please tell me what I ask if feasible.

The other option is to manually adjust the publish date also, which might work but Im not sure how to do.

To manually adjust the publish date, in your WP-Admin dashboard under Posts, click on the post you want to edit. In the publish module, click Edit under where is says Published on: <date> Adjust your date accordingly and click OK. Make sure you click Update to save all changes. The date for that post should now be reflected in your blog once you have refreshed the screen.

    @ keromonkey,

My link to the support page “Show Your Posts in Chronological Order” above failed for unknown reasons. The URL is https://en.support.wordpress.com/show-your-posts-in-chronological-order/. However, the only option on that page pertinent to your case is the third one, “Alter the Publish Date.” Display posts shortcode, adding strings to URLs (the resultant URLs are just post archives pages), and creating a book-like structure are inapplicable to your goal of displaying the posts in numerical order on the front page of a website with the Cubic theme.

You’ll have to change the publish dates. See the instructions by megzo114, directly above. You can change the dates before or after publishing a post. The “Show Your Posts in Chronological Order” support page says,

Manually adjust the publish date on your posts before you publish them to set the order you want them to display. If your posts have already been published, you can edit them and adjust the publish date.

    Example:
    1. Publish post 1 on May 28, today.
    2. Modify the publish date of post 2 to May 27.
    3. Modify the publish date of post 3 to May 26.
    4. Modify the publish date of post 4 to May 25.
    etc.

    Thank you very much

    @megz0114

The insight you provided was wonderful. I have it all in order now!
(Now if only I could figure out how to hide the wordpress dates displayed on the blogs/posts). Haha ^_^

But its not super important, I am very happy with this outcome.

I believe removing the dates would require CSS customization.

    @ keromonkey,

    Thank you very much.

    You’re welcome.

I have it all in order now!

    Excellent. Looks good!

I believe removing the dates would require CSS customization.

I mean removing the display of publish dates in the Cubic post tiles.
