How do I get new blog entries displayed as (5) images in the top? Help
-
Hi,
I decided to use the Canard-theme, because I want a blog that presents blog entries visually, with an image. In the demo, this theme is supposed to display 5 different images on the home page.
However, I can´t seem to get this to work :( I already experimented with pages and featured images and such, but I must be doing something wrong.
Would be really nice if someone could tell me what to do so my new (or chosen) blog entries get displayed as an image as shown in the demo.
Thx!
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hey mfauli,
I think perhaps you need to get a few more posts going (all with featured images set) to activate the feature you’re after – you need to tag each post as featured, as well as ensure that post has an image (simply setting featured images on their own wont be enough – you need to also add the tag to the post itself)
If you want to confirm how to set some featured posts, please read the section titled “Featured Content and Featured Images” on the Canard page:
https://theme.wordpress.com/themes/canard/
You can select which posts to display with the “featured” post tag, this is a tag you will need to add to each post that you would like featured in this area.
You can learn more about tagging posts here: https://en.support.wordpress.com/posts/tags/
It’s also important to note that the Featured Content area displays when your front page is set to show your latest posts – so if you switch your home page back to displaying a static page you will loose this feature.
And don’t forget to add that featured image to each post you’d like featured! Hopefully following these steps, and doing it for a number (more than 5!) posts, should fix the problem and give you 5 blog posts displayed as images at the top.
I hope this helps!

Hi @mfauli,
You can set up the front page by navigating to MySites ->Themes ->Customizer->Static Front Page, select the radio button “Your Latest Posts”. You can then look into the theme page and follow the guidelines to set the content as Featured Content. You can read more about it here:
https://wordpress.com/theme/canardHope this helps, let me know for any further assistance.
Thanks! -
Hi again @mfauli,
I took a few moments to install the Canard theme onto my testing WordPress.com site, and have discovered a small tweak which should help you get those featured images up and running how you’d like them!
1. As I (and @pavanraheja) mentioned, you will need to go into your MySites ->Themes ->Customizer->Static Front Page Menu, and ensure that the radio button is set to ‘Your Latest Posts’.
2. Next scroll down a little on the left-hand side menu and expand the Featured Content menu. Once inside, nominate a tag name in the text-box. You can use anything, but I recommend using featured to keep things simple.
3. Now visit MySites -> Blog Posts and choose a post you would like featured. Open it in the editing window.
4. On the right-hand side menu, ensure that you have nominated a featured image for this post. Now visit the categories and tags section just above that. Make sure to add the tag featured (or whatever you nominated in step 2).
5. Save/Publish your post, and repeat steps 3 & 4 with another four posts.
Give it a few moments and if you are not seeing any results when you visit your website, then clear your browser cache. (Instructions to do that are here:
As I mentioned, I just installed this theme on my own testing sites, and managed to get the five featured images working just fine by following these steps! It seems for some other people, it is step 2 that makes all the difference for them.
Good luck, I hope this helps!

Thx for all the quick and detailed advice :) I´ll try doing all of it now.
One piece of information if it wasn´t clear: I´m using wordpress.com-website, not a self-hosted one (I want to keep it simple for now, focus on content, not on website building and such ;>).
-
Hey again!
Let me know if it works for you – I have my fingers crossed :)
Thanks for letting me know that you’re on WordPress.com, you’re definitely right – it’s the best plan for if you want to keep things simple and focus on creating excellent content.
I could tell by the link you provided to your site that you are on WordPress.com (rather than self hosted), so all of my instructions will work perfectly on a WordPress.com website.
Good luck, and keep us updated!

Ok, problem, a small one, I hope: If you take a look at the website now, I got 3 articles to be displayed as images a the top of the page. I then created three more blog entries, doing exactly the same (I believe?) and … they´re not displayed as images at the top. Afaik 5 of them should be displayed at the top, with the oldest one dropping out of it.
Any idea?
-
Sounds like you’re off to a great start having 3 images working! Fantastic.
When I tested this theme out before, I had a similar issue. For a while, only two of my posts were appearing as images.
I have just checked your site – the first time I tried only 3 images came up as featured. But I waited a few more minutes, and now they all appear to be working for me.
Are they working now at your end?
-
stooooop! now it seems to be working :D just took some time, like you said.
thanks a lot! I´ll write again if i need anymore help, but thank you so much for the big, big help! have a nice day/night/evening :D

Hey no problem at all! So glad I could figure out what was going on for you :)
Definitely jump back on if you have any more problems. Enjoy your evening.

ok, sorry, :D, but one thing that bugs me a little: do you know how to remove the search-icon that´s in the middle of the top, above the 5 images, but below the menu names? if it´s not removable i guess i´ll learn to live with it, but maybe there´s a way … :>
thx ;>
-
I had a bit of a poke around and I cannot see any easy way to turn off the search icon in the top menu.
It is certainly possible, but would possibly require an additional plugin or by using custom CSS. These are both features not available on the free plan, and would require a paid upgrade to Personal, Premium or Business. (The differences are here, if you’re curious: https://wordpress.com/pricing/
From the basic WordPress.com interface, I can’t see any straight forward solution to get rid of it, as it is part of that particular theme and not a widget or menu item.
-
ok, well, having a search up there isn’t thaaaat bad. maybe even good for users ^^ thx again
-
He anna, hope you’re still there ;>
Just something I wondered if I can do something about it: It takes really long for a newly posted featured blog-entry to show up in one of the 5 picture positions at the website’s top. Like, several hours long.
Is that something related to wordpress.com-servers and I can’t do anything about it, or am I doing something wrong when posting my articles that for whatever reason slows down updates on my website?
As always: thx!
-
Hi again!
Yes, I’m definitely still here :)
This is not a normal WordPress.com server issue – but my first suggestion would be refreshing your browser cache. Sometimes our browsers hold onto older versions of a page for a while to save you resources.
I recommended this earlier in the thread for something different, but I will suggest you try it again now a few minutes after posting your featured blog, and see if that makes any difference.
You can find those instructions here: https://en.support.wordpress.com/browser-issues/#clearing-your-browser-cache
Let me know if that resolves things at all :)

Okay, here I am, once again. :> Because there´s something weird going on:
I mentioned before how it sometimes too REALLY long for the newest featured article to be displayed in those 5 pictures at the site´s top.
About 3 hours ago, I published a new article (about the Ajin-movie) and it wouldn´t show as one of the 5 pictures. I returned to the pc just now, refreshed, still not featured (despite having used the correct tag). It´s also definitely not a problem of my pc´s cooies/cache, because the website also wasn´t updated when i would visit it via my smartphone. So … I wanted to ask for help here. And just when I clicked on the “theme edit” button in my wordpress-menu so that i could reach the support-link that would lead me to this forum, I noticed that NOW the new article is featured as one of the 5 pictures.
And this happened before, but I chalked it up to being coincidential. Guess not.
So … do any of you know what´s happening here? Is this a bug of the theme? Is there something I´m missing? The website is working otherwise and I´m not reporting news on a level where it needs to be featured so quickly that waiting would become an issue. But it´s weird, isn´t it?
Thx as always :D

Ah, I think you can chalk that up to cache that clears itself regularly, but not constantly. That helps keep your site running quickly.
