How do I get 'Related posts' to work?

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi

I’m new in WordPress, and I would like to show related posts under my posts. When I write a new one, WordPress Related Posts can’t find any related posts. Why is that? I thought when tags were the same, it would be able to find other posts with the same tag. Maybe I’m mistaken?

I know, there is a limit/minimum on 10 posts to get ‘Related posts’ to work, but I already have 23. I moved my blog from blogspot, so my actual written number of posts on WordPress is only four. Is that the problem?

    What else can I do?

I hope somebody is able to help be, as I think it is a really useful feature!!

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi there. I’m not sure why they aren’t showing for you. I know there were some issues with image-heavy posts, so there’s a requirement of 500 bytes of text (about 100 words) per post for it to be included, but your posts look like they should meet that. I’ve asked the developers of the feature to provide more information on how the related posts are generated so that we can troubleshoot your site’s experience. As soon as I hear back from them I’ll follow up.

I’m still not sure why it’s not working on your site (I have asked the developers to help investigate), but I notice that while you have 23 posts, only 5 of them have tags. The feature takes into account the post title, content, tags, and categories. Just to see what happens, can you try adding tags to 6 or 7 more posts? If it doesn’t change anything, at least we can rule that out.

    Hi again
Thank you. I’ve added more tags to more or less all my posts and given it quite some time to adjust/upload… But it still doesn’t work… :(

    Hi there,

I just checked your blog, and I see the related posts showing up. For example, I see them at the bottom of this post: http://mithyggeligehjorne.com/2013/11/25/grafiske-tegninger-til-vaeggen/

If you don’t see them there, you may need to refresh your browser or clear your browser’s cache.

Please let me know if I can provide any further help with this. :)

    Hi Rachel

Thanks for looking at my problem. I still can’t make it show.. I’ve tried another browser. Refreshing or clearing my browser’s cache didn’t help either. I tried on my boyfriend’s computer – no result.

I only see tags and comments..

I use Mac – can that be an issue?

    Hi there,

Using a Mac isn’t a problem (I’m using one, too) but you may need to adjust some browser settings if the Related Posts aren’t appearing for you.

Just to make sure we’re looking in the same place, here’s a screenshot (from Safari) of where I see the Related Posts on your latest blog post: https://cloudup.com/cJaqMnd10Im

If you don’t see the Related Posts there, here are a couple things to check:

If you’ve checked those things and still don’t see Related Posts on your blog, can you make a screenshot of what you see on that part of your blog post instead? You can upload screenshots to your Media Library under Media > Add New in your dashboard, or you can use an online service like Snaggy.

Please let me know if you have any questions about that. :)

Finally I can see it. I don’t what I/you did, but now it works. Thank you!! :)

One more question: can I change the number of shown post from three to five?

  • Unknown's avatar

I’m glad it’s working for you now. :)

The Related Posts feature shows three posts, and there isn’t a way to change that. However, if you’d like you can add your own related posts section to your blog posts, by adding a list of links at the bottom of your post when you’re writing it. That way, you can choose as many as you want. :)

Ok! :) Thank you very much for your help and support!! :)
