How do I get rid of File Names when I post images?Z

  • Unknown's avatar

I am very new to Word Press and looked around and couldn’t find the answer to my problem. When I post photos, I would not like the actual file name to post above the photo, when another person enlarges a specific photo. Is there a way to turn this off or disable it?

If so, I sure would appreciate an answer on how to do it.

    Thank you.

You have posted photos as a gallery on the page called New Mexico Trip.

You chosen to have the images of your gallery open as attachment pages. That is the reason the title appears above the pictures. The gallery “attachment pages” also have built in navigation from one pic to the next, so the titles are needed.

You could insert a gallery where the images do not open in attachment pages: when you insert a gallery, choose “link thumbnails to image file”

But you seem very new to blogging. Here are a couple of other ideas you should consider as you start your blog:

You can insert images individually, linking to nothing or linking to larger versions of themselves (or to attachment pages where the titles will appear above them)

Have you worked your way through the Learn WordPress tutorial?
    http://learn.wordpress.com/

Because you are a new blogger, I think you should take a look at the difference between posts and pages:

    Pages vs. Posts

Thank you for your reply 1tess, I appreciate it.

No, I’ll be honest, I have not worked my way through the WordPress tutorial, but will start immediately, after I reply to your post.

One question I have for you, before I go into the tutorials. I don’t understand your reply about inserting images individually, linking to nothing or linking to larger versions of themselves. My goal as I start my blog is to keep all file names of the photons hidden, where they won’t show up on the blog at all. I want it to look as professional as I can possibly make it. Can you please explain what you meant, and which option you would choose for this, so the file names do not show up?

    Thank you.

Off to go through some of the tutorials.

I still must be doing something wrong. I went in and “un-linked” the photos, or at least thought I did, but the file names are still above the photos.

Will I need to delete the entire page and start all over?

    Thanks!

  • Unknown's avatar

You don’t have to delete the page, only delete the gallery and then re-insert it.
When you see Gallery Options, choose “Link thumbnails to” “image file”
Or you can switch to html and change the gallery shortcode to
    [gallery link="file"]
The pictures will open in a plain window. (The same window, so readers will have to use the back button of their browsers to return to your gallery.)

Here is the support document for the gallery shortcode:

Another possibility, though not a very good one, would be to go to your media library and delete the titles of your pictures. Not a good idea because it will make it difficult for you to search for the pictures, and search engines won’t index them either (not good if you want people to find your blog!). But that brings to mind that you could name your pictures with a relevant word or two rather than just the number your camera gives them.

    Hi 1Tess,

Thanks for the help and the tips. I deleted the first gallery and then did what you told me to do, in order to get rid of the file names. Truthfully, I don’t like the look for the way it looks now, by opening up the full image, but “off” the blog, so to speak.

I wish I could have it where it has the same appearance as it did in the first go round of my page, but without the file names above each shot.

I guess that would be asking for too much, woudln’t it? I think I’ll leave it alone for a couple of days, but I really like the looks of the first page better, if I could only get rid of the file names above the photographs.

I do appreciate your help with this.

Before you go too far, since your blog looks like you plan to have lots of photos, I’d suggest that rather than making a page for each set of photos, you should put them into posts. If you have dozens of pages with photos, then your navigation bar will soon be very cluttered and confusing.

Write posts, or just insert your pictures into posts, then assign categories to the posts. Then you can use a category widget to enable readers to find your pictures. Note that posts can have multiple categories as well, so someone looking for “humming birds” could find your pics of them, and someone else looking for “New Mexico” could also find what they are looking for.

Please read the link I showed you above about the difference between posts and pages. (I don’t mean to but in to your business, but I really do think you will be more satisfied using posts)

  • Unknown's avatar

1tess, believe me, you are NOT butting into my business, I promise! I want my blog to look good and professional, so I will remove the gallery completely, and add them into a post. I’ll go back and re-read the difference between posts and pages. I don’t want a cluttered look on my blog.

Let me go study the “post” guidelines, so I can add the photos and categories to them. Thank you very much for all your help, I greatly appreciate it.

Two other suggestions. One is, before you upload any images from your computer to your blog, rename them on your computer. For instance, the photos of mine which I’d like to be viewed without the file name, I right click on the file (might be command and click if you have a Mac, I haven’t) and choose ‘rename, then before the dot and file name extension I change the name to something else. If you’re not bothered by SEO (search engine optimisation) then you could easily keep a note of your file names and code them for yourself with shorter titles, or even name each one with its own title. Then when that’s done, you can start uploading them to your blog. The title is what people see in various views, not just by hovering their cursor over your images. For instance, by right-clicking on an imageand choosing ‘properties’, a panel usually comes up with the title and info about that file.

The other suggestion I have for you is this: as one can have any number of blogs here, make yourself a separate blog just for testing things and learning about things then, if you make any mistakes, other people won’t see them and you won’t be embarrassed about it. (Although of course, you might not be anyway!) If you make the ‘test’ blog private (so that only you and, if you want, anyone you invite to share your blog, can see it) then you’ll be able to work out how to do things to your hearts content and just do things in your public blog as and when you’re confident with what you’ve learned.

Thanks for the tips absurdoldbird, I greatly appreciate them.

I don’t know about renaming the files though. I like to keep the file names the same as they were or are, when they come out of the camera. I look to put an “r” after the file name to help me remember that I retouched it, and then I put an underscore after that, then the date I retouched it. So it would look something like this, HKK3082r_21JUL11.jpg But I wish WordPress would allow it where that file name doesn’t show up in the photograph. I like the looks of WordPress when I uploaded them the original way truthfully, but just don’t like the file names appearing above the photographs.

As for SEO, I have no clue about that and how it would affect my photographs on this blog.

For your final suggestion, I guess I could do that and make a private blog, but that seems like extra work. If I make a mistake on my blog, I’d soon just go in there and fix it, then have to have two blogs……I think that would be more time consuming.

Your thoughts are greatly appreciated. And if anyone else wants to chime in, please feel free to do so.

Maybe enough people can convince WordPress to somehow, someway, “fix” that little bug that I don’t like???? One can hope, can’t he?

    :)

Ok, against my better judgment I thought of how you can get rid of the titles on attachment pages.
dashboard —> media —> library —> edit pictures one by one as follows:
type (without the spaces you see here)
    & nbsp ;
That is the html code for non breaking space
Then in the “description” area of the window, copy the name of your file so you will be able to search for it should you ever want to find the image again. If you don’t, and you have a few thousand images in your library, then you will have to look at page after page of thumbnails in your library. Well, maybe if you remember the date, you would only have to search through one month of thumbs…
The title (or number) will still be visible, but it will be below the image in your theme, and much less conspicuous.

Lots of people use image search to find information, and titles on the image files (especially relevant titles) are a good way to improve SEO (search engine optimization)—getting more readers.

I keep the numbers from my camera, but add a descriptive title before them. Also, I rarely use the gallery shortcode, preferring to insert images with the text, or in a table which allows me to control exactly how they are displayed in a post.

A second, private, practice test blog is a good way to experiment with things, changing themes, features and so on. You can export your original blog (and include your images) then import it to the other. That way you can see what your original will look like with changes. Of course you can pretty much experiment on your original, but if you mess it up it might be a lot of work to fix.

OH! I just realized how you can hide even the title under the image!
In the line for “description” add this span styling. The title will still be there, but it waill be white text on a white background. Voilá: hidden.
    <span style="color:white;">YOUR_NUMBER_OR_TITLE</span>

    1tess,

You are far too kind for giving me all of this information, yet I want to be very honest with you; a lot of what you are telling me is WAY beyond my WordPress comprehension, since I am so new to all of it…….

I just can’t see a reason why I would want to “search” for a certain photo on my blog at a later date. Maybe you can explain to me, why I would?

I apologize for sounding so ignorant about WordPress, but it is only my second week of using it and I have LOTS to learn.

  • Unknown's avatar

You’ll get there: we all started as novices. ≥^!^≤

Don’t worry about asking questions. That’s why we volunteers come here: to help other people by answering questions. No one forces us to do it.

You may never need to search for a certain photo ever again, but chances are you will, so why make things unnecessarily difficult. If you start with a good foundation, then it will make writing and reading your site much more efficient.

I have 3,656 images on my main blog about Japanese cooking and sometimes I’ll decide to make a recipe a second or third time: it’s interesting to compare how I served the same dish at other times. Or I’ll have a post about a specific ingredient so I’ll want to re-use a picture of that ingredient. Or I might use a picture to make a link to a previous post: much more interesting than a text link.

You may never do any of those things, but as a beginner you don’t truly know yet.

  • Unknown's avatar

Okay, so since you’ve blogged a lot longer than I have, obviously, which would you recommend and I’ll stick with it.

I truly don’t like the fact that the file names are showing up above the photos in the gallery, but I like the looks of the gallery that way, instead of loading up the file to another page or another frame.

Does that make sense in what I am trying to explain?

Should I just go back and start all over and just let the file names show? I do like the looks of that better, at least from a photography aspect, just wish I could have my cake and eat it, too.

Thanks so much for helping me on this!

I think I’ve found a way to do this, but only for a single-image. While we’re on WordPress.com and do things a bit differently here, I found this via a WordPress.org forum:
    http://wordpress.org/support/topic/hide-alt-title-on-thumbnail-mouseover

So, if you were to post a single image (ie, not a gallery but one image or several images, one above the other in each post, in the ‘Standard Format’, after posting via the Visual Editor (‘Visual’ tab is at top right of post editor where you compose your post, next to HTML tab), then once you’ve got the image in there and you can see it, click on the HTML tab that’s next to the Visual tab. You’ll now see the code and can remove all of the title. Then just save your post and see if it appears without the mouse over. I hope that works! I was surprised when it worked for me!

By the way, it’s just the second reply that I’m suggesting you use, as you can’t use Javascript here in WordPress.com.

Don’t bother posting to the WordPress.org forums by the way, they don’t have experience of WordPress.com as such it’s just that the HTML code used in the image editor is the same or similar. Anyway, I did this on my wordpress.com blog and it worked.

Oh and – try not to be scared of the code! It’s not going to hurt to experiment and it’s really the best way to learn.

  • Unknown's avatar

I’m sorry to be so dense and not see the answer I’m looking for.

From the link you sent me, I’m supposed to try the second reply?

Can I do this and remove all titles above my photographs? If not, I’m going to go back to the original way I posted then and just not worry about the file name being at the top.

I like the looks of that layout better, even the file names are shown above the photo.

Thanks for helping me try to figure out a solution with this.

Whoops, sorry, I meant the second post, not the second reply. The one that begins:

Those are coming from the title attribute on the img tag.

I don’t know how you’re generating your thumbnails, but if you can access the code directly, just remove all the title attributes.

Can you do that and remove all titles above your photos? Answer to that is – I don’t know. But I do know that you lose nothing but a few minutes by trying. Ultimately what you do in your own blog is up to you. That’s what makes it your blog. Unique.

I had a look at your blog just now – it looks good with the theme you’re using now. And I noticed you’ve made the title of the cloud photo ‘clouds’ – that looks good too.

  • Unknown's avatar

I will try to do that on those first photos, when I have a little more time. Right now I’m waiting for a client to show up, then run a few errands and head home.

Thanks for the compliment on the title on the cloud photo. I’ve got lots of learning to do, but I WILL get there.
