Always take a look at the other posts on the front page if you’re having an issue, because if you’re having a problem other people probably are and may have started threads that already have the solutions in them. Usually it’s the longest thread that has the most information:

I’ve been following all the dialogue regarding the new ‘maybe related topics’ thing. And I have to say that I love the idea. Local or global, I’m all for it. You guys say that you may need to do tweaking, and I see no need the same suggestions which have already been mentioned (such as being able to select which ones make the ‘final round’ on an entry, etc). But kind of related to this thread, but also ties in with the 2.5 thing a couple weeks ago……Has anyone ever thought of doing an across-the-board bulletin which would show on every dashboard of every blogger. Like something that flashes to instruct/coach of these new changes? It seems it would save a lot of headache, on the forums and support side of things…..Just a thought.

Just to further follow-up, you guys already do this when wordpress dashboard isn’t accessible from time-to-time; that’s what I mean by a flash bulletin….

You know, this might be an optional feature, but it seems to have been snuck in without much fan fare. My objection to the links is that they are only vaguely related to the topic of myposts – the “possibly” part of “possibly related” is far too tenuous for my liking.

Nor do I care to receive traffic from “possibly related” sites.

As an hypothetical example both a feminist blog and a p0rn review blog may have porn as a tag but – since they would be discussing the topic from different perspectives – I doubt they would want to exchange links.

Hi all – very active conversation – :)

The goal of the new feature is to create opportunities for readers to discover more content that is related to what you’re writing about. We’ve included content from your archives, from other WordPress.com blogs and for Mainstream Media sites (MSM).

Like any technology, we’re making lots (and lots) of tweaks on the fly to get the filters properly tuned. While subjective, we’ve been successful in making these tweaks on a large number of partner sites (www.sphere.com) so I’m hopeful (with a little patience and goodwill), we’ll make improvements as we go along. In the meantime, you’re input is really critical for us to make those improvements, so please keep sending.

    Tony

Okay. Please either A) remove VIP blogs from the pool of recommended blogs or B) include Possibly Related links at the bottom of those VIP blogs, as you do with ours. That is the SINGLE factor which convinced me to turn the feature off. I’ve seen my blog link out to VIP blogs repeatedly, and I do not see a single “Related Links” on any VIP blog whatsoever.

  • Unknown's avatar

The SINGLE factor that convinced me of turning it off was the lack of clarification between me and WP.com. It’s the same issue with the global tags.

I like the ideas and would support it, but I don’t want my readers thinking that these are my links or recommendations that I selected. I wouldn’t mind if it had a WP.com top/box that stated that WP.com recommends these posts or click here to read other blogs at WP.com.

At least that provides some feedback to the reader that they will be leaving my blog and going somewhere else that I (the blogger) didn’t recommend or link to, etc. For any reader to come to a blog and read an article, it appears that the blog writer/author is recommending these posts which may have nothing to do with the author, post, or topic.

They do now say “Automattically recommended links” or something like that.

Like many of the respondents here, I wish there had been more notification before these were added to our pages automatically. I use my blog as an example of my unedited writing (I’m a copy editor and proofreader), and it was beyond annoying to see “possibly related links” with typos and incorrect punctuation tied to my work!

WordPress really needs to think about the philosophy behind this feature. It is suggesting that nothing is “off limits” for being posted on a certain blog — even as far as having pornographic links on a “family friendly” blog. This is a really bad move, and you will lose users if you don’t modify it. Yes, it is true that you can (apparently) disable it, but the thing that will really make this a good feature is by keeping the control in the hands of the blog administrators and authors. Let THEM decide whether a suggested link ought to make the cut. It really doesn’t seem all that unreasonable — when you click “publish” a box will come up with possibly related links, and the user can check whether they apply. Perhaps it can even get more sophisticated, with options such as “Never suggest links from this site.”

I appreciate the suggestions from many above. The reason why I’m on WordPress and not Blogger is because Blogger makes it way to easy for people to click innocently on a link and find themselves getting an eye full…pornography comes to mind. The links which were attached to my recent post had nothing to do with my topic. I would appreciate being notified about a change like this and being given an opportunity to opt out. While I recognize that the intention may be good…this is something which the blog author should have the ability to control without being penalized by less exposure.

2 days ago was the first time i saw it. I’ll have no problems with it unless it is totally unrelated. This can help people get more exposure for their work. When will it fully operational and optional?
