How do I get rid of the 'call to action' button?

I just started my first blog using the ‘Gateway’ theme. On the first page you see when you open my blog it says in huge letters ‘Welcome to WordPress.com’and then has a ‘call to action’ button. I cannot for the life of me figure out how to make these two things go away. Please help!
