How do I get rid of the wordpress bar at the top?
-
Hello,
I apologize if this has already been solved. I just got this domain (ohmniscientaudiocollective.com) for a student organization a couple of friends and I started. I already paid for the domain and everything through wordpress, but I want to know how to get rid of the wordpress bar at the top for those who are signed in on their wordpress accounts (don’t know the correct term for it). When people aren’t logged on to their wordpress account, the top bar isn’t there (which is what I want). Though, I logged onto a separate/new account just to see if that top bar is there on the site and it is. How do I get rid of it?
Thanks!
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

I should also add that we’re thinking of buying a theme for the site (link to them is below). One of my other friends got this theme and got his domain through wordpress and the bar isn’t at the top. Is it the theme that made that happen? Or, if we buy any kind of theme, that’s what will get rid of the wordpress bar?

I do not, though I have no qualms with dishing out the $30 for it. Once I get the Custom Design upgrade, is there a certain line of CSS that you have that I can just plug in and it’ll get rid of the bar?
-
-
Not really, it’s more like a paragraph. The code for each theme varies. I’m afraid I don’t know CSS editing and can’t help further with this. You might want to do a search of the CSS forum so you know what you’re getting into.

Hey Spencer,
Couple of things here:
The blog you’ve set up, ohmniscientaudiocollective.com, is on WordPress.com.
The theme you linked to on ThemeForest is for the self-hosted version of WordPress. It won’t work on WordPress.com.
If you’re looking to add a nicer theme to your site, check out the theme showcase. There are plenty of free and paid themes to choose from that’ll work on your site.
Second point, regarding the top bar:
That’s the WordPress admin bar. It’s a standard part of the WordPress.com user interface. Removing it is a violation of the ToS.
Hope this helps. :)

I see, I see. Thanks for the clarification. Now, would “hiding” the admin bar be any different than removing it?
-
No difference. You cannot remove it on WordPress.com. The admin bar is meant to stay for all users of wp.com. \
Just curious, but why do you want to remove it?
-
would “hiding” the admin bar be any different than removing it?
No – still a violation of the TOS which gets your blog suspended
-
Gotcha. Thanks, all!
I want to sort of hide it since I want the site to look more ‘professional’ than looking like some blog. Though, I suppose if I wanted a true professional site, I would’ve just gone somewhere else, where I would have to spend a lot more money and such. Oh well. Now that I know I can’t hide/remove it, no need for me worry about it.
-
Hey Spencer, I wouldn’t worry much about the professionalism of it.
The toolbar only appears for WordPress.com users, who are already used to seeing it across the WordPress.com network – including all of the major WordPress.com VIP clients.
You’re in good company. ;)

Hi raincoaster,
I’ve been here a while, not as long as you have, but as far back as I can remember, it has never been allowed, removing the admin bar. Maybe that was above my paygrade in my infant days, but now they are using it for all sorts of access to quick posts and reader and all: they are not going to smile on folks who remove it. Of course that is only my speculation. And it’s useful for us volunteers to be sure that someone does really have a wp.com vs wp.org site.(and it is annoying when one wants to use page jumps, making them show up in the wrong place: 28px too low…)
-
Well, I find the whole thing annoying and I’d prefer to ditch it altogether, but nobody asked me.
-
No, none of us was “in that loop.” I’m glad that there are still alternatives but get very annoyed when I accidentally click on one of those “new & improved” ways to use wp.com.
I have a lot of blogs I participate in so being able to put them in order used to be useful. Now they scroll off the bottom of the screen so I’m forced to look for the “new” alternative to find one at the end of the alphabet. Cheese…

I think it has something to do with this:
In December 2011, with the release of WordPress 3.3 “Sonny” [link], the WordPress admin bar became the toolbar [link]. It went from being a useful component to becoming a mandatory part of the WordPress UI.
Since what happens to core WordPress software carries over to WordPress.com, hiding the toolbar (still called the “admin bar” in .com documentation [link]) would break core functionality.
…the more you know. :P
