how do I get started?

I have a name for my website but your software doesn’t let me get any further. Do I have to sign up/pay for a plan before I’m allowed to continue?

yes, you have to sign up, basically, it’s just creating an account with WordPress.com which you have already done since you are posting on the forum.
for resources on getting stated see this guide
and yes, you are going to need to purchase a plan if you have a domain you wish to use on your website. otherwise, you can always start with a free account and test out the platform.

I guess I created an account with WordPress but all that happened was they put in the title and subtitle I wanted when you go to the page. I didn’t pay for it. Now I have written About Me two times already and saved it, but as soon as I left the page, what I wrote disappeared. I also pulled up a photo of me, but I can’t get it on the page. There’s just a picture of some unknown person (when I hit the About Page) and a blue background shaped like a mountain on the opening page. Do I have to pay the $4.00 a month (for the “free” plan) to start creating my site? Also, what exactly am I getting for free on the “free plan”? Do I need to have a domain name? Thanks again

https://sandrabeditingservices.wordpress.com/I suspect that 3 of these were created in error, and probably need deletion – does this sound correct?
