How do I get traffic from search engines?
-
I keep checking my traffic since I started WordPress and today I read that I have not gotten any traffic through search engines. Can I do anything to change that or is it simply a matter of time until they pick up my tags?
Thank you all for your advice.

You’ve only been posting for three days! Give it time.
It takes time for your site to get recognised by the search engines and even longer for it to move up the rankings. So even if your blog was found in a google search, if it’s on the 100th page, no one’s actually going to click on it.
Good things to do are:
Write good content.
Link to other blogs.
Comment on other blogs.
Register with technorati and similar sites.
Be patient. -
-
Anything people want to read. So it’s probably easier to say what isn’t good content: meaningless ramblings; lists of links; stolen content; scams etc. If you have something worthwhile to talk about, or interesting media content, then readers will find you.
-
Rosclarke,
what do you think about my contents so far? Is it more on the good or more on the meaningless side?
You as a reader do you find it worthwhile reading? -
I think it’s a bit random. Blogs generally work better when there’s a clear theme. The theme can be ‘my own personal thoughts on life’, and it’s definitely okay to have occasional posts that are off topic. But readers like to have a sense of what to expect.
Also, you have a lot of posts that look quite a lot like advertising which would put me off as a reader. It’s fine to occasionally link to a product you really like, but it seems like half your posts are links to the same shop.
-
You got that right. It’s my shop.
The idea is to mix fun advertising with thoughts about every day life. Kind of like a colorful magazine. If you know what I mean. Mixed information about fun new things category lifestyle, useful links and articles about daily topics.
But of course I know that everybody’s taste is different. What I find interesting may not have to be your idea of things worth reading.
But I sure appreciate you sharing your thoughts with me. -
Check the policy on types of blogs allowed at wordpress.com. I think what you’re doing at the moment is fine, but you’ll want to make sure you don’t inadvertently break the Terms of Service.
-
Thanks for that too. Just read the types of blogs and I should be fine according to that.

Hi risingthoughts. I visited you earlier today and left a comment on your about page. I also checked out your shop. I love the popcorn greeting cards. They’re unique, and since I hate spending money on a card that does nothing but get tossed… it would appeal to people like me.
I agree with rosclarke about how to keep visitors coming back, there must be more than the “look at my other place” posts. So, say… if you post one of those “look at my shop” posts each day, you should have another post each day that’s content. Or only do the “look at my shop” posts once a week or something, but the ratio of actual content has to be higher. I know you’re very new, so you’re in the best place to start off right! ;-)
When I was trying to establish my blog, I had a feature each Monday called the Monday Melee. If you visit my blog and click the “for ewe” image in the sidebar, you’ll see a list of ‘features’ I’ve used over time, to give readers a reason to come back. As the feature gets old and boring, I’ve retired it and started a new one.
Right now I do Friday Food Porn.
I suggest you come up with a regular item… like a daily quote, or something that’s interesting and dear to you, and then go market that. If it’s something they can take part in, you can go list it at meme directories. That will help for traffic too. But the big thing is what rosclarke said… give them a reason to keep coming back and they will.
Good luck!

Seriously, it can take up to six weeks to get properly indexed by search engines. The best way to get indexed rapidly is to post at least once a day, use tags and categories wisely, and make sure that every single post you write has a link to somewhere else on the web. Search engines love links, and so do other bloggers, so link to them. Bloggers will also follow who’s linked to them and may link back.

Tell me about it rain. I wish I’d made time months ago to get my fraccers.com site off the ground and now I’m doing that whole “n00b” thing all over again.
-
I’m seriously thinking of doing an online class in building readership. But first, need a more stable computer. ETA a month or so, when somebody sells me his old MacBook so he can get the new one.
-
fracas,
thanks for the advice.
That is actually what I had in mind, a mix of useful information about topics related to my products. Something like a lifestyle magazine with advertising and related articles.
I will try to keep a good balance of “advertising” and articles or commerce-free information.
Glad you like my Popcorn Greetings.
I started blogging because marketing gurus told me that this is the new way to bring traffic to your website, more important than keywords and all that stuff on the website.
So far blogging seems fun and I like it, it’s a little like having my own magazine or little newspaper.raincoaster,
thank you too for the advice. -
If you want advertising, you’re going to have to move off WordPress.com, since paid advertising and paid posts are strictly against the terms of service.

Ways by which you can immediately increase search engine traffic is broken down to 3 things:
1. Copywriting – This encompasses many things, titles, subject matter, the post and url’s to name the most important. It also goes hand in hand with The Art of Linkbaiting
2. Links – Make it Easy for People to Link to You
3. Networking – Done right, a well built network of contacts, friends and like-minded bloggers can seriously help you get the link love you need, both directly and indirectly. Here are a few tips and resources for working your network for better Search traffic:
* Read Chris Garrett’s Networking for Blog Success
* Comment and participate on blogs within your niche — Get to know the people around you
* Email with them, LINK to them, they’ll reciprocate, trust me.
* Expand outside of blogs — find forums, newsletters and groups in your topic
* Use social bookmarking sites to discover related topics (see right hand side) and hence expand your groups, newsletters, forums and blogs search even further
* Above all: Be generous. If you respect your network, and work hard to be part of the community surounding your topic, the rewards can really pay of — never abuse it, it tends ot backfire in all kinds of horrible ways. That’s not to say those tasks don’t require skill, but it really is that simple.
