How do I get traffic to my site

I should preface this question by saying that I have no access to either a credit or a debit card, so paying for an upgrade is impossible. I chose WordPress because it’s the only web host, along with Blogger, who offer free sites with many positive choices. That being said, I have subbed my site to the more popular search engines like Google and Bing, two months ago and as far as I can determine, my pages haven’t been crawled.
I find tips like including site maps too complicated. These, along with other suggestions just aren’t practical unless one uses html. When I had a Geocities account (anyone remember those?) I exclusively used html to build my site. It was the only method available and I liked it because one has much more control over what content to use, along with IMG SRC to post pictures and create backgrounds, but not many web builders seem to use it anymore.
Anyhow, I update my site every week, so it is somewhat discouraging to put so much work and effort into my account to have it go unnoticed. Is there any simple ways to get traffic that don’t involve acquiring a paid account. Thanks.

I’d just like to say that upgrading to a paid plan doesn’t make the slightest difference to how many people reach your site.
I’ve had a free site for many years and visitor numbers fluctuate. Today my site has only had 9 visitors but hopefully they found something interesting/amusing to read.
