How do I get two sizes of an image?
-
I am putting out images on my blog. However, they can not be larger than 600 pixler wide, since they otherwise would go outside its space on smaller screens/laptops. I can see, however, that I can press the hand on the image and that makes it come up in another window. Is it possible to have a much larger image as the “second” one?

Best is to upload two versions of your picture:
One that will fit into your theme (600px)
One that is bigger
(but do use some sort of image compression—a multi-MB pic takes forever to load)When you upload the 2 pictures, make a note of the link URL of the larger image.
When you insert the 600px image, you’ll see a line “Link URL”
That is where you put the link to your larger image. Then in “Advanced Setting” set the pic to open in a new window. Update.

This shows how, when using the Visual Editor, you will see the tab for “advanced settings”

Isn’t there a simpler way of doing this?
I usually load photos that are 1250 x 938, since those seem to fill my screen nicely at full size. This is wider than my theme permits, but if I select the full size option they are automatically displayed at 1024 x 733 which fit in the theme very nicely.
If I then select the “Advanced Settings” I can see that the size of the image is set as 1027 x 733, and I can adjust that if I want to. In Osloray’s case he would set the width to 600, and clear the height setting (the software then automatically keeps the aspect ratio as per the original). This would seem to fulfil his requirements, without the need to upload 2 pictures, thus saving both time and storage space.
It also links back to the larger image automatically – another step saved?
Have I missed something? (I’m still new here, and eager to learn)

If you are considering image quality, then you will want to upload images to the size they will be displayed rather than let WordPress do the re-sizing for you:
