Hi there – The Columnist does not display widgets on the front page; only at the bottom on individual posts/pages:
http://franklinbcb.wordpress.com/2013/01/23/upcoming-fbc-events/Most themes do display widgets on the front page, however, so you might see if there’s a theme you like just as well that does:

Thanks for your reply but if they’re not widgets, how do I add other columns on the home page. The example of The Columnist has a row of 4 short columns with pictures across the front page. Each then connects the reader with another page of the blog. Currently my home page has just one of these. How do I add more across the home page. Thanks again for your time.

Hi there – The Columnist displays all your posts in columns. You currently have only one post:
https://franklinbcb.wordpress.com/wp-admin/edit.phpAs you add more posts, they’ll fill in in columns.

Oh, thank you, thank you. Things are looking up on our blog. Now, how do I get a post to link (continue reading . . .) to existing pages like the calendar one did? Instead it added a new page and I wanted it to take the reader to the page with the same name or topic. Hope I soon won’t have to bother you anymore.

Not a bother at all, that’s what I’m here for! It looks like the Continue Reading link only appears on posts that have enough content that not all of it can be shown in the excerpt. For the posts where it doesn’t appear, the entire post content appears in the excerpt.
The calendar post links to a post like the other posts. The thing to understand is the difference between posts and pages. You can read more about that here:
Post vs. PageSo for example, this is a post and it appears in the columns:
http://franklinbcb.wordpress.com/2014/01/13/meet-the-franklin-bird-club/And this is a page with the same title as that post, and it appears in the menu at the top:
http://franklinbcb.wordpress.com/619-2/Typically, people use pages organized in a menu for information that doesn’t change and that readers will need to access over and over (about us, calendar, etc.), and they use posts for updates and news (this week’s outing, etc.).
Does that help?

eurello–I can’t thank you enough for your help. It was a tough week trying to figure out our blog’s new look before you got involved. We’ve now moved ahead and things are looking–and working–well. I wouldn’t have believed that online help could get right to the heart of problems and present solutions that I could understand and use. I’ve learned lots and hope I won’t need you until our next “big change”, but if I do it’s great to know help will be there.–Suzanne
