How do I handle 301 redirects

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi,
I have a Joomla site that I’m planning on moving to wordpress. I would like to use the business plan, $299. I would like to know how I can handle my 301 redirects?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi cappiello83,

I believe that you’ll need the Redirect upgrade. It doesn’t look like it’s included in the Business plan.

I’ll tag this thread for Staff assistance, so that they can clarify.

The Site Redirect is only for sending traffic from a WordPress.COM blog to another site

It sounds like you want to do incoming redirects since your Joomla site probably has a different link structure, the Site Redirect will not do that for you. There is no upgrade that I am aware of that will do what you want to do.

If you want incoming redirects then you would need to install the WordPress.ORG software on you own host – then you can probably find a Plugin that would do the redirects for you. That would mean that you would not be hosted on WordPress.COM

    Hi there,

WordPress.com doesn’t support 301 redirects for individual pages. If your Joomla site uses a link structure similar to the WordPress.com link structure, the WordPress software will do its best to find the correct page — you can see some examples here:

    https://en.support.wordpress.com/import/coming-from-self-hosted/#a-note-on-permalinks

(Those examples were created for folks moving from WordPress.org to WordPress.com, but depending on your site’s link structure it may be useful for you.)

If you need more fine-tuned control over those redirects, though, I’d agree with auxclass — you’ll probably be better over with a self-hosted WordPress site using the software from WordPress.org.

Please let me know if you have any questions about that. :)
