How do I handle obsolete links to my posts and avoid "Page not found" error?

I’m changing the way in which I use my blog, and I just recently made most of the posts I’ve created over the last four years private. The problem is that the are a lot of links in circulation to those posts, and I don’t want people to get that Page not found (“This is somewhat embarrassing … “) error message.

How would I go about automatically redirecting those old links to land the readers on a different (public) page or post?

    Thanks in advance!

By the way, this is somewhat of a duplicate post. I didn’t think the title or the original made sense, but I couldn’t figure out how to edit or delete it. Sorry.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

You cannot actually do that. You can buy a redirect upgrade, but not JUST for your 404 page. It is very, very bad, in terms of search engine visibility, to set popular posts to private. If you’re going to do it, you’re going to take a huge hit in blog visibility, and at WP.com the 404 page is not customizable.
