How do I hange someone from Follower to Contributor?

  • Unknown's avatar

Good morning. I have a Follower that I would like to make a Contributor. How do I change their role? Is it the process if I wanted to change any role from or to follower, contributor, editor, or author?

    Thanks for any input,
    ~Watt

You do that on the dashboard Users page.

Unfortunately, that only shows members that are NOT only followers. I need to promote someone from Follower status.

I think you will need to invite them as a Contributor – I don’t think you can “promote” someone

@auxclass is correct; you’d need to use the person’s WordPress.com email address or username to invite them to your blog as a Contributor under Users -> Add New.

Hi, I have a similar question. I just changed a private site to public (and password protected one page).
I invited desired members to join the site. I want them to be able to: 1) not register on WordPress 2) be notified of my posts via email and 3) comment on my posts but not necessarily create posts, themselves.
When I set up the private site a few days ago, I invited the members as CONTRIBUTORS, but I fear this was overkill and possibly confusing (I hope they don’t enter the site via the dashboard).
Should I have invited them to be FOLLOWERS or VIEWERS instead? If so, for those members who have already accepted my invitation as CONTRIBUTORS, the “change user role” doesn’t seem to allow me to change to FOLLOWER, and I don’t know how to change user roles for those who have not yet accepted the invite.
So – if you tell me that CONTRIBUTORS can do 1, 2, and 3 AND they won’t be directed to the dashboard, perhaps I shouldn’t worry about anything.
But if this isn’t the case and it would be more appropriate to select them as FOLLOWERS, then please let me know. Thank you and sorry to be so long winded.

  • Hi @pamelajhu,

This page explains the user roles in detail, which you may find helpful: http://en.support.wordpress.com/user-roles/

It sounds like Follower is the best choice for your purposes (you want your users to be able to read posts and leave comments, but not write their own posts).

It’s not possible to switch someone’s role to “Follower” as far as I know. You’ll need to delete the existing invitations and existing users from your blog, and then re-invite them as Followers.

    To delete users: http://en.support.wordpress.com/user-roles/#removing-users-from-your-blog

I hope this helps, and let me know if you have any other questions.

    Hi
Oh dear, I feel like i would be inconveniencing folks by deleting an invite and then having to reinvite them. If I keep the members as Contributors, I wouldn’t mind too much if they created a post, themselves, but I’m more concerned with their being notified of my posts via email and being able to make comments. Do Contributors have these abilities (like Followers)?

Thank you so much for your reply.

    Hi @pamelajhu!

Any user has the ability to subscribe to your public blog, regardless of their user role. Read more about subscriptions and Followers here:
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/following/
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/followers/

You can invite them to Follow or Contribute to your blog, but it’s up to them to accept the invite. Contributors can make comments and subscribe via email as well.

    I hope this helps!
