How do I have just the wordpress.org blog but not one under wordpress.com?
-
I first made an account with wordpress.com but then decided I wanted to host my own site using wordpress software from wordpress.org. Now I have two blogs, tanocalvenoa.com (hosted externally), and tanocalvenoa.wordpress.com – but I want to get rid of the second and only have the first. How do I do this? Would this require or not require cancelling my wordpress.com account? Could not find any info in searches about this.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Here are a few options for you:
If you want to keep the url just in case, but delete the current content: Empty Site
If you want to delete the site entirely: Delete Site
(note! You will not be able to reclaim the address later)Aside, FYI: you cannot delete accounts on wordpress.com.
If you have any further questions, ask away!

Make the wordpress.com blog private http://en.support.wordpress.com/settings/privacy-settings/Periodically export content from tanocalvenoa.com and import it into tanocalvenoa.wordpress.com so you have a backup blog on different servers than the one your tanocalvenoa.com content is hosted on.
Believe me when I say that if tanocalvenoa.com is ever hacked you will glad that you did what I said.

lettergrade’s answer is what I needed, it didn’t come up at first for some reason. Thanks.

Yes you can hide the tanocalvenoa.wordpress.com blog under My Blogs. http://en.support.wordpress.com/my-blogs/#filters

I do NOT recommend deleting the content from tanocalvenoa.wordpress.com. I hope you don’t live to regret the decision you make. -

Please read it again and know that either gutting the content out of tanocalvenoa.wordpress.com or deleting it is NOT a wise thing to do.

I totally agree with timethief, setting the blog to private is a better alternative, since deletion means you lose the url forever.
When it comes to backups, though, I would say that my preference for protecting self-hosted WordPress content is a good backup strategy for your database and uploads, because import/exporting them to your wordpress.com blog and back can be more effort than installing a really good backup plugin.
There are a number of backup plugins in the wordpress.org plugin repository, and there’s also VaultPress (paid).
I personally use BackWPUp to automatically back up databases and files to my Dropbox account daily, and I’m very happy.

When it comes to backups, … and I’m very happy.
That’s good advice too. Know that the Volunteers here do have self hosted sites too. We avoid providing any specific WordPress.org advice in WordPress.com forum threads because it creates confusion when we do.
-
Of course, that makes a lot of sense. It must feel strange sometimes, though, to omit a more appropriate answer? I guess we could just point out where more information is and let them go to it.

Yes. We Volunteers have noted that unless that’s what we do they come back for more and more support and soon there are others from WordPress.org doing the same and saying “why support for him and not for me”. Then we get confused WordPress.com members posting too and saying “I tried that and can’t find it or it didn’t work”. It’s just not worth it.
