How do I have my email enabled again and my work restored?

  • Unknown's avatar

I tried to log in to my WP today, and was told that the log in information was incorrect. Then, I requested to reset my password, and was told “The e-mail could not be sent. Possible reason: your host may have disabled the mail() function.” I went back into my email and saw that I failed to upgrade by the time my account expired. I just upgraded, and now my wordpress has lost all of its themes, functions, and all the work that I’ve done for the past year. Furthermore, I still can’t log in. Please reply to this email ASAP as I need to have a functioning blog for work-related purposes. Thank you very much.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hi!

First, let’s get the account recovery issues solved. Have you tried filling out our account recovery form here?

    Recover Your Account

If you no longer have access the email address on the account, that form is going to be your best bet.

I just upgraded, and now my wordpress has lost all of its themes, functions, and all the work that I’ve done for the past year.

Could you please confirm the URL of the site you’re referring to?

    Sure, christianstork.wordpress.com

I have filled out the account recovery page. It told me that I would receive a password reset email. I have yet to receive one…

Can someone please respond and help me with this or provide me with a number I can call? This is an issue that I need to resolve quickly please.

    Hi @christianstork,

Just to recap a bit, you’re currently posting to the forums through @christianstork so it looks like you’re able to access that account. If you’re able to login to the account, you should be able to access christianstork.wordpress.com. Could you elaborate on what is happening when you view that blog?

Also, when you try logging in, can you try logging straight into WordPress.com (not christianstork.wordpress.com/wp-admin)?

Okay, going through wordpress.com, I was able to log back in and reset my password. Thanks.

    What about the lost data?

  • Unknown's avatar

Great! I’m glad you were able to regain account access. Regarding your data, it appears as though many files were deleted several months ago. I’m afraid there isn’t a way to restore that data. Do you happen to have an export of your blog (looks like one was generated awhile back)?

  • Unknown's avatar

Unfortunately I do not… but I have it set up with GoDaddy that christianstork.wordpress.com automatically reroutes to christianstork.com — when I view it as the latter, all of my data is current. Will I have to manually transfer all of that info again through wordpress?

    Hi!

The domain christianstork.com is actually a self-hosted site. It has completely different files than christianstork.wordpress.com. If you would like to move the content from christianstork.com over to WordPress.com, you would need to export/import the content as mentioned here:

    Export your website’s content

    Import a Website

Can you give that a try?

  • Unknown's avatar

Sure, I will momentarily. Will I still have to reinstall my themes, plugins, etc. for it to format correctly though?

  • Unknown's avatar

I think there might be some confusion between WordPress.org (your self-hosted site) and WordPress.com. You cannot install themes or plugins at WordPress.com. You can only install them on self-hosted sites using WordPress.org software. The difference is broken down here:

    WordPress.com vs. WordPress.org

If you import your content over to WordPress.com, only the content and media files will be transferred. Plugins, theme customizations, etc will not be moved over.
