How do I hide certain pages?

I would like to make a ‘reference book’ in my blog consisting of a title page (to be displayed in the pages section), a table of contents (accessible from the title page only), and individual section pages (accessible from the table of contents only). The ‘make a book’ process described in the FAQ is not what I want – I want the book to be ‘beneath the surface’ accessible by only the title page in my Pages section. I don’t want the TOC and individual sections to be listed in the Pages section at all, nor do I want to make them blog posts. Other than ‘host the TOC and sections on another website,’ do I have any solutions?

I’m very much of the opinion that without hosting them offsite this cannot be done. You could make drafts and they’d be invisible to all but you, but if you want to put pages on the blog, they have to be blog posts or pages and accessible in the way blog posts or pages are.

How about if I make the TOC and sections private? Can I link to a private page?

Don’t want it to be password protected, just not visible on the ‘pages’ list. So far the only way I’ve seen to do that is to make the pages ‘private.’

    “Private”
Selecting this option will make a post private when you click “Save”. This means that the post will be visible on your blog, but only to you when you are logged in. If you select “Private” and then click “Publish” the post will be posted publicly on your blog for everyone to see (unlike password protected posts).
A post marked Private will be listed alongside published posts on the Manage Post page. Posts which are Saved as Private are not visible to Blog Surfer. They are completely invisible to everyone except you (and will be invisible to you if you are not logged into wordpress.com).
They are also invisible to your blog’s Search widget.

Remember: clicking “Publish ” will always publish your post publicly on your blog, even it the post status is Private.

Thanks timethief, it looks like creating child pages is the way to go.

From what I can see — I agree.

Q: Is it possible to create a page that can be linked to but doesn’t show up anywhere on the home page?

A: Mark’s advice from the thread above is: “Do not use the Pages widget and instead use a text widget to create the links. This also has the bonus effect of allowing you to place pages in the order you wish.”
